good Dixon, you've taken the plunge! Now just get out there, take photos, adjust settings to see the differences and get used to it. You've gotten some good links to online courses/information that are good starts. Your lens choice is good for a mid wide angle to short telephoto.

You may think about buying an external flash later on if you see the need for a more powerful flash than the on camera pop up.

You've got plenty of time to practice before your LOS trip, so get cracking!

Thanks guys :)

I really enjoyed doing all the research online and trying out various cameras in-store, which included the Canon450D, SonyA700 and several Nikons.

Once I'd held the D90 in my hands I knew I wanted it. I had already been reading up about it on the internet and found criticism rare, with the exception of the movie facility, which to be honest played no part in why I chose it.

I really appreciate all the advice you guys gave me about choices and suggestions and I liked them all, but the D90 felt right. I realise kit lenses are considered 'bottom end' glass, but the 18-105mm with the D90 is a cut above the normal kit lens in terms of quality and provides a decent range until I get the feel of what and where I want to go with this new hobby :)

I also heard considerable price rises are imminent and Currys and my local (to work) camera shop had literally their last one or two in stock prior to the new prices taking effect.

You may think about buying an external flash later on if you see the need for a more powerful flash than the on camera pop up.

Yes Rx, that is advice I will definately follow and I plan on getting the Nikon SB400 in the near future and as you rightly say I have time to practice before my next trip :)

Are you tempted with the D90 also Josh?

So far I'm very pleased but the manual looks a bit thick. A good match for me :|

I read the bit about charging/fitting the battery so far and also how to attach the strap

What's the reaction you will get in bars if you show up with a dslr? I've seen the no photos allowed sign many places. But there also seems to be a lot/some shooting from customers in bars. A list of bars who allow photographing would be nice.

I got a D90 and need to work on my portrait shots 8)

most bars do not allow photos, but if you get permission from the owner or mamasan - it would be ok. Of course you also need to be careful not to show the faces of customers.

Sometimes it's ok to take photos during special events. I was at King's Corner mamasan's birthday party in 2007 and was allowed to take photos. Also Miss Cascades 2007 photo taking was ok.

Of course photographing the lady you have chosen for the evening is generally ok.

Yes i am Dixon! But at the moment i'm looking for a good lens to go with the EOS 450D. So it may be all about Lenses. As i want to buy a good lens (500/600€) there 's a good chance that i buy the 450D 'cause i don't want to go over 1000€ (total budget).
