Are you tempted with the D90 also Josh?

Yes i am Dixon! But at the moment i'm looking for a good lens to go with the EOS 450D. So it may be all about Lenses. As i want to buy a good lens (500/600€) there 's a good chance that i buy the 450D 'cause i don't want to go over 1000€ (total budget).

450D perfect starter choice Josh, good call. Nice lens option:

It'll keep you well happy for long time, save you some money, and beauty of effective range.

Dutch, when you were speaking highly of the Sigma 18-200, i answered that i was interested in the lens you are now mentioning...
(read my post from 26May)

Apart from that, did you read the last post of page10 of this thread?
Cheers

josh69, while the 28-135 may be a good lens - think carefully about the kind of photos you will take. 28 mm is not really "wide angle" when using an apsc DSLR like the Canon450 or most of the entry level DSLRs.

If you think you will need wide angle, you need to start at least at 18 mm, with the apsc DSLRs.

As mentioned earlier, the field of view for these cameras is 50% that of a regular 35 mm film SLR. This means that the "crop factor" makes the lens appear to have the view of a focal length 50% longer. 28 mm will be closer to 42 mm, and 18 mm will be closer to 27 mm.

If you go ahead with the 28 - 135, you may want to buy a prime lens or wide angle zoom for shots where you need the wider angle of view.

Guys maybe you can help me out here, at present I have a Nokia Coolpix P5100 and it's a nice enough camera but a little big in the old shorts. Is there something that will take as nice pics but maybe a little more pocket able. I'm not interested in a photographers camera more a point and shoot that I can put in my pocket without making me look like I've got a raging hard on, as on the whole I don't think I have an eye for a good shot unlike some of the guys here who obviously have a talent for such things.

I'm sure you meant Nikon and not Nokia......

I've had various point and shoots and thought I was happy enough but you always find an area that you're not content with or technology has moved on and you feel the need to catch up....

I've just changed my Sony T300 for a Nikon Coolpix S230 which I'm finding to be an outstanding camera.........its a bit pricey for a compact though which may play a large part in your decision making process.......

Good Luck!

filbert have a look at the first 6 pages of this thread - there's a lot of discussion about what point and shoot digital camera would be a good choice. A lot depends on what kind of photos you would like to take. If you are going to specifically take photos in the bar a good low light camera or a camera with a good flash would be best.

While size is convenient there are some limitations - the smaller cameras tend to have less powerful flashes, so if their low light capability is poor, then the photos will not be as good, unless you are quite close when you take the photo.

Have a read and feel free to ask more questions!

guys, shot today at 50mm full frame (~35 on a crop body) ; if you're a noob, get a starter body and best bet if you want to go zoom is 18-200, effective ~25, as you will need sufficient room to shoot at 35mm on crop body. Be carefull though if you shoot below 35mm you start distorting your subject, particularly annoying with people portraiture. rather get a fish eye then.

If you want to stay in the point and shoot category, the Panasonic Lumix LX3 is a good camera - if you've seen Snappers' photos on TLF that is the camera he used. If you want more flexibility the TZ5 has a 10X optical zoom, but isn't quite as pocketable.
