Today - not a rant !
In fact the opposite!

I'm rejoicing that the authorities seem to be addressing the tuk-tuk problem on the island. We're a long way from solving the pricing issue, but at least they seem to be tackling the mob mentality.

I read that article and a couple of others and I can't tell specifically what they are being charged with.

Is there supposed to be a standard fare and they ignore it by over charging?

I do know they are expensive, I wanted to go from Patong to Karon and several quoted me 450 Baht as the price. It only costs 700 Baht to ride from Patong to the airport in a nice car.

I've never tried to hire a tuk-tuk for a ride from one location in Patong to another location in Patong, but I'm guessing they overcharge for that too.

.. I read that article, they are supposedly arresting corrupt officials too, even arrested the corrupt mayor, I'll bet that was a shock that woke him up; then aside from that article the Red Cross is complaining about the jail conditions there because of the over crowded jails?! Guess they will have to live with those conditions until they get things cleaned up there, maybe the price of rice will go up now since they have so many jailbirds to feed..

Oh my Buddha! A 20 baht Baht-bus system for Patong? Now that would be a break-through!

Believe it when i see it, but the signs are promising!

Jim, I bet you keep rubbing your eyes in disbelief at all the good news that seems to keep flowing your way down there in Phuket. It might be low season now but recent events and news are certainly giving you an un-seasonal high :D

A baht bus system would be a massive improvement.

Let's hope it continues to success.

How about Pinochet, Galtieri, Pol Pot, or Duvalier...care to adopt any of these military rulers as relatives as well?

Another one of your majority positive posts? How about waiting to see what happens down the road before comparing Gen. Payruth to the list of dishonor you casually toss around?

Your favorite democratically elected Thai Rak Thai former prime minister Thaksin had several hundreds of  so called "drug dealers" executed without trial and of course the fantastic justified and legal "accidental" killing of the Muslim protestors at Tak Bai? Of course you won't compare Thaksin to the above list as democracy is the least worst of all the systems of government in place.

I'm still waiting for your political theories for a system of government superior to a representative democracy. Or should I just mark you down as one of those in favor of military dictatorships like Jim?

This might help you understand jonnie.

I do hope so, as your american "democracy at all costs" mantra is so blinkered.

Its generally a sign of a weak democracy when the military takes over a country and seldom is that coup something that is beneficial to the public, and especially not to the poor, again in general. With that said, as an isolated thing, the military cleaning up the corruption in Phuket seems to be a good thing. Lets wait and see what happens.
