The X-Pro1 was top of my want list but when they first announced it a few months back they indicated a launch price of just under a grand.

Now everywhere is asking 1429 before you stick some glass on it...I'm having serious second thoughts.

I get all the photo mags and no one has uttered a peep about this, any ideas CL? 8)

Pete, wait for the coming review on dpreview.com. I read on one of their forums that this thing has the potential to be better than the equivalent Leica at 4 times the price. Someone opined that it could be the camera of the year or the decade. Something like that.

Are you sure you can handle that much quality? :D

It should really bring out all the glory in their holes... 8)

I've just read the review in AP and they gave it a surprisingly lowish 87% which equates to very good, oddly enough I was expecting higher.

Digital Rev wasn't too enthused about it either.

87% low!! Wow, I think the highest rating dpreview has ever handed out is 81%. They are renowned for being tough but fair.

I can't comment about reviews I haven't read & I don't know how hard these other guys mark, but I will be very interested in how dpreview call it. In my limited experience, if they say it is good, it is good.

Hi Petesie,

I really wouldn't know. I guess that it's kind of in a league of its own competing with say Leica M9 at a fraction of the cost. Sure there are some new mirrorless that have APS-C (Sony 7 something) but they don't have the innovation that the XP1 carries. I have always assumen a 2.4K SGD + 1K SGD investment, after some negotion around 3-3.2-ish K SGD

IMO if I assume most of use shoot at reasonable low dimension for web (800-1280) I think the OMD is a fine alternative, its sits around the 1K US$ mark, which give you a 4/3s sensor but awesome performance, that 5-axis stabilization, the creative filters, and wait for it... the ability to shoot this baby at about 500US$ http://bit.ly/olwoTg

At the end of the day I am from that crowd saying, just get a camera with some solid specs for what you want to shoot, that feels sexy in your hands, and shoot, and some more. Get most out of it. Take it everywhere. You'll be paying a few buck per day per year. Trust me at our dimension you wont notice much difference so its then up to you, your creative approach, your ability to get that shot... that's when it gets fun... I wish I had more time for that...

If you have the cash sure the XP1 (or Sony 7 Something especially if you do video a lot (i don't)) are the non-DSLR-body top-performers to go for I guess. At 4/3's the OMD with Leica glass would be my get for sure. But the X100 with its firmware upgrades and black edition would be right next to that on top of the list. The again I am in love with my black X1 http://bit.ly/HqXFRO my baby M9 that makes magic. Let's see if I can resist the temptation :-)

Don't know if this answers your questions, but good luck in making your choice.

Be a little bit skeptical here guys, they all get paid by the manufacturers

And you know Kai from Digital Rev... Leica, Leica, Leica... so don't read to much into his reviews... especially when the XP1 is challenging his baby...

One of the best reviews I have seen to date is http://bit.ly/zO8tMR these guys I trust, they are Canadian :-)

The OMD will get some consideration as I have a fondness for my old OM-1 and I still have all the Zuiko glass.

I'm passing through Heathrow this week so hopefully I'll get my paws on them as they are not available here in the Sandpit.

Cheers for the info CL.

CL is trying to remember the Sony Nex 7, here's the review from Digital Photography Review of Sony Nex 7. It's become popular with good image quality due to it's APSC size sensor in a small body. Plus it is possible to use a multitude of other manufacturers' lenses using adapters.

Here's a photo of it compared to the Panasonic GX1, Olympus Pen E-P3, and Fuji FinePix X100

DC - thanks for pointing that out - it was a linked photo - and now it's been fixed.

In the meantime, people who check out the NEX-7 on Digital Photography Review can also read the reviews on the Sony Alpha A-65, the Alpha A-77 and the preview on the A-57. All interesting alternatives to the Canon and Nikon DSLR offerings.

Like the fact the the NEX7 has focus peaking makes for excellent manual shooting say with Leica lens. At the same time 23MP, WTF, the sensor cant handle that, hence poor ISO performance, ISO you need in low light shooting. My two cents, totally random.

Any of you camera geeks around end of month?
