The retro style is fab and the controls were easy to use and coming in at 400 sovs the price is indeed right.
However...I moseyed on up to my Nikon dealer to find he's just had a delivery of the Nikon 1 series.
http://www.nikon1.co.uk/en_GB_N1/
He offered me the V1 with 2 lenses for 700...luckily he'd just sold the last one so I was able to witness it getting handed over though he tells me another batch arrives in 2 days.
What to do...?

The X10 is the current flavour of the month, at least until the new Canon G1X is released, but it does have decent performance in something you can hang off your belt.
There is one unique feature on the V1 that intrigues me & may sway your opinion in favour of it. Everytime you take a picture, the camera actually takes about 20 shots & keeps the best five. That way you have a far better chance to actually nail the shot you wanted. I am not completely sure how this function operates & whether it can be switched off or if it is on permanently.
It must use up a lot of memory but that isn't a high price to pay if you manage to improve your percentage of "keepers" from 50% to over 90. If this technology works in practice as well as it sounds, I am sure it will become available across the Nikon range. Or maybe it only works on the One series because they have such small sensors. The smallest in the category. How weird is that?

Whilst the 10 mp sensor size has disappointed a few reviewers they do recognise the potential in these developments and the impact it may on a future range of Nikon releases.
At the initial release price many points were lost as this was deemed too high and didn't represent good value against other camera's whose performance was better and the street price was cheaper.
I've weighed this all up and read all the reviews so the least I can do is go along and have a look as the price I'm quoted is 30% less than what was available when it first came out.

I would have said that Nikon would never release a new product to the market that wasn't a great camera. However after the trouble with their P7000, I wonder what on earth happened to that famed Japanese attention to detail.
There's no problem with 10MP, that's more than enough. More megapixels does not make for better pictures. As you know. I am very interested in the new features you mention. No doubt they have something to do with the One series ability to take multiple shots. I read somewhere you can save all 20 (or was it 30) of the shots that get taken each time you press the shutter. I think they vary in focus points & exposure. That's very impressive.
Or did I imagine I read that? Petesie, can you please try it & give us your opinion. Cheers.
PS The previews for the new D800 have just been released. It has a 36.3MP sensor. Ridiculous!

Just read the news on Nikons site...the D800's a belter for sure.
The camera mags will be full of it next month so I'll try and update the info here accordingly.
Hopefully I'll be impressed with the V1 enough though the competition is fierce for CSC's these days.
Canon decided not to enter this particular changeable lens arena and their new replacement for the G12, the GX1 has an awesome spec though at 699 it's a bit steep for a bulky plastic compact.

Without wanting to sound pedantic, the G1X isn't a replacement for the G12, it is in a totally new category of its own. It's sensor size is about 8 times larger than the One series. It uses the same sensor as the Canon 7D. Not the whole APS-C size but most of it. Expectations are high.

That is what I call an excellent DSLR. You took the photo with f/2.2 with the ISO speed 200. This was probably set automatically by the P mode. You could have shot it with aperture 1.4 in the Av mode. The speed would be higher, but you can easily go up to 1600 and there will be no grain. Also, use the spot metering in this case and an automatic AF with only one focus point - the one in the middle.Just had a play with my Canon 60D with the 50mm f/1.4 USM attached.............whatever the fuck that all means.

One more time in English....
Only joking bullseye, I get what you mean but still need to familiarise myself with all the various settings, program modes, etc.
