Great tips there Bully. :D

I just couldn't resist the Fuji X10 either. I'm not rich so I recycled the Nikon P7000 which paid for half of it and January was a good month for me where I shifted 4 guitars across the globe to new homes in Japan, Italy, Germany and France.

The camera bug has well and truly bitten. ;-)

I no hab big money, I just recycled a few bits of kit which gave me enough to make it a fairly small spend.

I usually do this every 2 years which keeps my gear and the buzz fresh.

The V1 is giving some seriously good results though getting the hang of the new features may involve me actually reading the manual which will be a first. :D

Just had a play with my Canon 60D with the 50mm f/1.4 USM attached......

That is a nice lens, f1.4 is very fast & will be excellent for low light shots. The depth of field at f1.4 is a pain in the arse but once you work that out, you will be happy.

However, it won't be ideal for food photography. You need good DOF to get everything in focus & with a crop factor on a Canon of 1.6, you will need to get a fair way back from the subject.

But it will still work fine, all you need is one of these... a macro focusing rail. I bet you weren't counting on this being so complicated.

Just had a play with my Canon 60D with the 50mm f/1.4 USM attached.............whatever the fuck that all means. :D

Seems to take a nice shot even with poor lighting & no flash.

Need to spend some time learning how to operate my SLR...... :loco:

Cheers

LOL. What it means is that you got yourself an awesome piece of glass. Enjoy! If you run out of light and dont want to use flash (which sucks) and shoot auto on everything, the only thing you need to change is ISO allows for even lower light shooting, that button should be easy to find and change :-) not sure of 60D but bump it up to 800-1600

That is an awesome choice. I love it too as PNS. Try the EXR low light mode, jumps from 12 to 6 MP (the sensor is perfect for 6-8 MP), you'll get some pretty amazing results. For screen our res the 6 MP is more than enough too.

Congratulations to your first DSLR, KK. Canon 60D is an excellent camera. I bought it in a kit with 17-55mm/2.8 lenses last October. It is much better than the Canon 550D or 600D with the usual 18-55mm/3.5-5.6 zoom. A constant aperture on a zoom is excellent for portrait photography.

Which lenses did you buy?

Hope you get the best out of your new camera.

Thanks bullseye,

I just need a couple of striking ladyboys to practice on....

The other lense I bought was the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM.
I figured it would be good for food photography which is something I hope to pursue.

Cheers

Its an awesome portrait lens for non-studio ;-) hotel room portrait type thingmadoodles too :-) Studio portrait as per BEM post, but that ofc all changes with a hotel room setting; little space, short distances, low light.

You got yourself an awesome lens. Even its performance compared to the 1.2 is quite fantastic. Again, enjoy! I am using (well used) the 1.2 on my DSLR (its now dusting away :-) Do bear in mind the crop factor since your not shooting full frame, so 50= ~75mm in your D60 (35=~50mm).

I shot a lot with the 1.2 50MM on 5D MII FF and it's just perfect. What I also love is that its a prime, so fixed, meaning you need to be active to get the shot, the composition instead of laying back and just zooming in and out, makes for much more energetic shoots which will translate to the model.

I prefer 35MM to get up close and personal.

[...]. Anyway, I hope everyone who pays two thousand quid for the X-Pro1 with one lens finds it lives up to expectations.

Sure looks like it :-) http://bit.ly/wk0ulb

The X-Pro1 was top of my want list but when they first announced it a few months back they indicated a launch price of just under a grand.

Now everywhere is asking 1429 before you stick some glass on it...I'm having serious second thoughts.

I get all the photo mags and no one has uttered a peep about this, any ideas CL? 8)

I bought my wife the Canon G10 a few years ago and we have another little point and shoot in the house, but I haven't actually "OWNED" a camera of my own since before the digital revolution. But after a recent trip snorkeling in the Philippines I was thinking maybe I should get one that could also be fitted with one of those underwater covers.

I know there are quite a few dive enthusiasts here on LB69 - any suggestions on a camera that could do a decent job cataloging exotic creatures both in and out of the water?

There are three ways to go Cracker... 1) Buy a DSLR & its marine housing with all the kit. That will give you a semi-pro set up & will cost 1000's.

2) Buy one of the new point'n'shoots, like the Panasonic LX5, the Olympus XZ-1, the Canon G12, the Fuji X10, etc, then pop it into a waterproof case with an attached underwater flash. Expensive enough but not so bad & will give good results. Very good actually.

3) Buy one of the popular waterproof cameras. They aren't rated for any great depth but will do the job. That's the cheapest option & is probably enough for what you want. At least it can give you a taste for it & let you decide to upgrade if you wish.
