[...] [3/4a are] essentially replacing some of the bottom-end compact DSLRs

Thanks for this recap, nice read (as always). Agree with above, and they do so easily. Only advantage I see is a bit better aperture on dSLR glass. Olympus and Panasonic have really done a great job.

Also note that high end 3/4s like the Leica X1 and Fuji X100 easily outperform mid-level dSLR's, albeit both 35mm equivalent fixed focal so limiting from that end but amazing censor, processor, ISO and glass performance (note here 35mm is ideal for portrait and street). Again these are limited that don't come with interchangeable lenses.

Not fair to compare to high-end full frame with top level glass, serves a different group of users I guess. Assuming most of us shoot around 1920 PPI max, a 3/4s with its equal quality, equal functionality, and loads more fun is simply a better choice. ISO argument in favour of dSLR I dont see.

But hey all in all, as you can read, just depends on how you want to use the machine. Either way get most out of it either shooting manual or auto. Muck around with ISO, aperture and shutter speed, and focus on the fun part; playing with light, composition, post-production.

Anyway, my two cents.

Nikon have been busy in the labs and this is their latest release;

Looks like they've built a mighty fine processor from the ground up here which will surely have a major impact on future releases in the DSLR camp...

The D700 is rumoured to be up for a major revamp and I think serious Nikon loving photographers will be in for a treat.

I must admit I'm more than a little tempted to splash a little cash on something, but I'm torn between which route to follow, so any input from you camera buffs would be much appreciated.

I currently have a Nikon D90 (with only the 18-55mm kit lens) and a Canon S90, but I want more zoom-ability.

I am undecided whether to consider a Nikon 55-300mm Zoom Lens for my D90, or buy one of the new cameras with amazing built-in zoom capability, such as the Nikon Coolpix L120, which has caught my eye. Their prices aren't too disimilar, but it's one or the other, not both.

Thoughts?

I love my little Canon S90

I am a bit of a fan of the superzooms. They pack so many features without the hassle of lugging around lots of different lenses etc. If you don't fancy going the full hog and buying a DSLR, like myself, then the superzooms are a good alternative.

The Nikon you mention looks pretty good, similar to my own Panasonic FZ40/FZ45. The Nikon uses AA batteries, an advantage in my books as they are easy to come by, and so you can always carry a spare rechargeable set with you. My Panasonic uses a Lithium Battery and it has been a bitch to find a spare plus the damn high price.

Both these cameras aim for the same market, Here is a link to a comparison of other cameras with these features.

I usually carry the bigger superzoom with me in the daytime, and take out my smaller Panasonic TZ7/ZS3 point and shoot for the evenings.

Lots of healthy competition out there leads to decent prices especially if you shop around. Recent bargains include last years Canon SX210s which is a great compact with superb features now shifting at 129 quid.

I use a Nikon P7000 compact which is also great so much so I leave my D300s DSLR at home and rarely use it, so much so I'm thinking of selling it and my lenses as it's had little use.

With the recent intro of the P7100 the earlier model should be shortly reasonably discounted.

I have my beady eye on the Nikon V1 as I think I'll get more use out of it due to it's compact nature.
