I think a lot of guys do not understand the dynamics of running a P4P bar and what the key buttons are. An operation such as Cascade has a very different model to somewhere like Sally's. They are probably about as far removed from each other as they can be and the only common factor is both have ladyboys as hostess staff.

In very simple terms, guys go to LB bars to look at ladyboys. Bars that have a well stocked, decent selection and attitude will do well and sell the most drinks. Bars that have a huge selection especially of new girls fresh in, will do very well on barfines - for the simple reason the girl probably cannot string a sentence together in basic English. They are totally different models and neither is right or wrong - they are what they are.

Point in case, the other night I popped into La Bamba and struggled to get a seat. Why? Couple of BM's were there but I suspect most customers wanted to eyeball big cock Nancy or whatever her name is. Then I went to Obsession. Obssession was absolutely dead with just a handful of LB's and girls there - presumably they had all been barfined out by that point. So we had one drink and left. Had there been 15-30 girls dancing - probably would have stayed for some more drinks. The bars only have a finite amount of hostess staff - Unfortunately Obsession lost out on this occasion due to their lack of hostesses. Nothing wrong with the bar whatsoever - service was prompt and accurate, the bill was spot on correct etc - just totally devoid of atmosphere - as too few hostess staff and thus no customers.

Moral of the story is that barfines for a bar are a fact of life - but too many and the bar does not retain customers drinking and too few, the hostesses get itchy feet and move bars - or as is very common in Pattaya, Freelance between various bars. It is a very tight call between having too many hostess staff (which creates bitchiness & problems as barfines per girl drop), or too few (and the bar does not sell any drink as nobody stays to drink - i.e. nothing to look at).

Personally I don't subscribe to the perception that the best customer is the 2 week millionaire - what a bar needs is a blend of various customer groups, some resident, some long term stayers and some guys in for a week or two. I never get hassled for drinks in any bar - however I often buy drinks for girls I know and chat with - they know I am not going to be barfining them and accept it. I am certainly not a lame dupe overpayer but neither am I am not understanding of the models in place - if you go into a hostess based bar, you should buy drinks for those who make the effort to do their job. Those who just walk up and say 'buy me drink' get zip off me. If you are not willing to buy drinks and pay barfines, then best not to frequent hostess bars would be my simple view.

Conversely if you want to take someone out a bar for 30 nights, then expect to pay a barfine if they are a salaried member of staff and it will likely cost between 9,000-18,000b, apart from whatever you negotiate with the girl. That to me would a massive no no, its a ludicrous amount, but barfines are set at a level to compensate the bar for then reduced drink sales. That is the crux of it - it is not what the girls earns, its what she generates that is being compensated against (see the Obsession example if its still not fully understood). In the same way that any lawyer, plumber, whatever quotes an hourly rate - there actual salary cost is much less than that - however that is the cost of their time - its up to the customer if they are willing/able to pay that. If your water tank in the roof is gushing water into your house then you don't have much choice and I would love to find a decent law firm that quotes me $20 hour for legal work, but its not the case for the level of work I have undertaken. If its simple, I just use an articles clerk who is more than competent to do the simple stuff and he is cheap and use the bigshots when its complex stuff.

I would be the first to say, that if someone is flitting between venues its easy to see they are freelancing and to whom would one pay a barfine - ironically the bars that allow this have only themselves to blame - they are trying to get revenue both ways. They are not paying the girl a salary and they try and get barfines. Personally I think the model they use, while financially viable in the short term, is not sustainable in the medium to long term. People wise up to these facts, same as the 180b lady drinks for a cola. IMHO, people don't object to paying a premium for a premium product but they do object to getting fleeced. My pet peeve is copy spirits - its so widespread its unreal. I object to paying for a premium spirit and getting a crappy copy spirit. So now in bars I just drink bottled beer.

So moral of the story, just go where you feel most comfortable and do what comes right to your particular view. But for sure, the mess of the barfine system is most prevalent in Pattaya - I once recall seeing Kwang in 4 venues in one night My automatic reaction would be not to pay a barfine in any of them if I was so inclined as its clear she is freelancing around all of them. Equally I doubt she has any loyalty to any of those venues and would be the first to slip the phone number to me if I were so inclined. Clearly others see this and are out & about much more than I am - I suspect that is why there is the confusion and bitterness to paying a barfine - some venues have only themselves to blame for trying to have it every way they can.

Hey man, I don't pay barfines period LOL - but I have done but I have been around the block long enough to know that by the 3rd day, the the horses are tired and need changing. I have no conceptual problem with a 30 day barfine but I for one would just never barfine the same girl for 30 nights in a row. As you know I have a steady girl - but 30 days continuous would do my head in. I am a firm believer that people need some space - however of course it helps that I live here - tomorrow, next week, whatever - makes no odds to me.

You beat me to it- well written opinions, but not well-read!!! I agree with what you say above- 90% of the time I don't pay barfines, normally its only if I'm away from home base or on some occsions in a certain bar in Phuket but those of us who live here can find plenty without paying extra and we arent going to be long term bar fining even if we had the patience for them!!

I think you are getting mixed up between one off barfines and long term barfines. I would have no problem, as I have stated with paying a barfine if someone fell in my lap, hitting all the right buttons and I was looking for some overnight fun. However if I had been going off to some tropical island the next day - I would not even consider taking her with me. That is the difference and that I suspect is more what residents are saying than on principal they would not pay barfines. To me the 300-600b is academic - I would probably have spent anywhere from 3,000-5,000b that night already on drinks, however the difference is I don't go out every night - at best its more likely once or twice a week.

The way I read it from PT's post is that he would do the same as me - IF someone came along in a bar and pressed all the right buttons - he would go for it. However its rare for that to happen, most of us are pretty bored rigid of all the usual bar flannel and thus the chances of such a wow factor encounter are pretty few and far between. Therefore, in the 95% of times it does not happen - its easier just to call a 'old reliable' performer to pop over whom you feel pretty sure won't steal anything or pull some shit on you in your room (as its a repeat encounter etc etc).

re-read my opening post, we all play the game when it comes to 2 or 3 nights, but the question is would you pay for 3 weeks.!

its tiring now listening to the guys who live there defending the bar and its business model. when as they state, they would never consider taking a ladyboy away for three weeks either way.
