Now that the full story is told I´d love to hear some more opinions from Thailand experts about this:

Angie had been taken by the police, on the grounds that prostitution is illegal

based on this information, what is likely to have happened?
(I guess they just kept her for a night or two, to send a clear signal? or to get some "fee" from her?)
How "normal" would that be for a girl working in cabaret?
Just something that happens, or more dramatic?

Good for you S&W, enjoyed your report. Good experiences. Never experienced such problems myself, but know that in most all Asian countries status through showcasing wealth, saving face, are important parts of all levels in society.

Next time perhaps do give the full upfront agreed amount, because you kinda agreed that upfront for the service right? That was what 20 Sing$? How much you tipped the security guard, paid for the water cooler?

What may work if you're unsure of quality of service is to bargain hard and agree at the low end then tip to satisfaction. The girls will not like it at start, but they need to get paid right, and once they experience your 'generosity' at the tipping end, they'll love it and may go all out to provide an optimal experience to maximize the tip.

They're selling a service, they get a base pay and commission to satisfaction...

Never actually tried but it sure sounds like a plan :-) Any-hoo, my two cents...

The agreed rate was 1000 Bt, which I reduced by 400, -- but then additional tip plus boiler cost was 900 ....

It´s clear you better pay the agreed amount if you want to avoid trouble, but then after that lack of service I simply didn´t feel like ....

Well, the problem with that approach may be that they tell each other what you paid, so the next girl will expect the same (at least)

My solution was to say: same money for every girl! (which was always accepted)
but then I was generous with dinner, breakfast etc.
I think if the basic pay is correct it is much more important how you treat them!

There's no way they will forget you but the girls won't make trouble over it. Should you bump into Angie, watch your body language. Thais are expert in detecting nervous behaviour & you should stand straight, return her stare while giving her a straight lipped smile. It is something she can't interpret but she will know you don't fear her.

If she detects fear, then she will see a chance to ask for money. There is no telling where that might lead to, thus you make it clear that you are in charge. Don't socialise around her, you do not want to cause her to lose face again. Then you will be asking for trouble. I saw where that led to in Pattaya recently on several occasions. Silent but deadly attacks from behind left the poor farang with a stiletto heel buried in his head.

I am not suggesting this is your fate but the Thais are all so crazy at the moment, why provoke them? Be calm & confident & you will be fine.
