I can assure you that NOTHING good would come such an escalation - even for those living far from the action in the playground of Sin City. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail - as the latest reports seem to indicate.

Abhisit is to be commended if this thing can be defused with a minimal loss of life - putting that English boarding school education to good use.

I can recall a figure of tourism being 30 - 35% of GDP for Thailand

Tourism is 6-7% of Thailand's GDP. So not quite as much as we might imagine.

well that might be the official numbers, but trust me reality is that its way higher....
not many of the small shops, bars, small hotels, etc is registering much income officially, and i think that the "darker" numbers are way higher...... :tada: you believe our small darlings from esaan is declaring all their income?? :D

lets talk about 20-25% and i think were closer.....

War, What is it good for ? 8)

The lastest news I've been reading tends to suggest the Red Shirts agreeing to a November election.

Still some conditions to be met, but it generally sounds promising.

One truth newspaper sell to public.. other truth is what poor Isaan folks who has nothing to loose think of Bangkok hi-so sweeties. We must take in consideration also that on internet most of articles we read are in The Nation or Bangkok Post... totally yellow oriented newspapers.

Anyone actually in Bangkok at the moment?

The papers seem to say it is all settled now until the election in November?

I am in Pattaya now and have my flight on 18th but would really like to spend a few nights near Nana Plaza, and meet up with an LB from last visit.

I have heard Nana is away from problems anyway?

Can't say I feel sorry for him. From the little I've learned about the general, he sounds like one of those despicable people who pushes others to become martyrs. :ang3:

From the same article:

The fiery general, accused by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of trying to prevent an end to the street demonstrations, has made no secret of encouraging the red-shirt protesters to oppose a reconciliation deal.

The anti-government protesters will fight to the end and will not end the rally, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) co-leader and opposition Puea Thai Party MP Jatuporn Prompan announced on the red-shirt stage at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong commercial district on Thursday night.

While Mr Jatuporn were giving the speech, the UDD guards were shining spotlights at nearby buildings to prevent snipers from attacking the red-shirt leaders.

Reports said some UDD core members remained inside a container behind the stage surrounded by many guards.

Anyone Know anything about this guy Jatuporn? A wikipedia search came up empty and not much on google either. I never trust guys who volunteer others to fight to the end.

At this point, the government is justified in deploying a few well-placed snipers in an attempt to de-fang the snake. Maybe freed of the demagogues this situation can still be defused - semi-peacefully. Certainly Abhisit has bent over backwards to prevent bloodshed. The Red Shirts need to clear out and trust Abhisit to negotiate in good faith down the road - or a lot of people will die.

Unfortunately that seems to be the goal for some...

IMHO it's at the stage now where people should start to reconsider their holiday plans. And if possible just hold off for a few months, in the hope that it calms down again.

It's still pretty safe in Pattaya, but hints of unrest have started to appear, and a lot of Thais seem pretty passionate and heated about the current situation. A few Bangkok residents have turned up here in Pattaya and I'm starting to consider heading home and waiting for it all to blows over.

It may still be unlikely, but talk of civil war seems to be knocking about in the media and on the streets, and it makes you think, is it worth taking a silly risk just for a ladyboy shagging holiday(?).

Add to this the current piss poor exchange rates and I think postponing upcomming holidays to later in the year (after the European Summer fades) wouldn't be the worst idea in the world..

I did exactly the same and booked flights for late September beginning October. I do hope you are wrong with civil war though and Thais will stick to what they do the best... ignoring problems around them and acting like they don’t exist.
