I recently transferred UKP from UK to Kasikorn - it took only 24 hours.
Kasikorn rang me to advise the rate was 50.125.
On the same day I visited the Kasirn branch at the Avenue Mall - 49.6
So you definitely obtain a better rate using Bank to Bank transfer and not converting cash.
This may not seem significant but as a Retired Visa holder you need show 800,000 Baht in the bank upon the Visa anniversary - so 0.5 Baht makes a difference.

Here are the Pound/Dollar Pound/Baht crossrates for the last three months. Nearly identical.

As long as you send it in your local currency, the TT (Bank transfer / Telex Transfer rate) is always better than the notes/money exchange rate. It's usually around 0.4-0.5 bht better to the £GBP. It's also usually advertised at the major booths (Kasikorn at least).
As you say, it does make a difference when transferring hefty ammounts.
50bht to the £ is still pretty crappy, but considering it was almost 45 in May, I guess we should be satisfied.
I've told Big Tel I'll throw a 'baht rate' party at one of the Pattaya bars if it is up to 58bht to the GB£ by November.

You can see the cash amount and use TT for debit/credit card rates which get the wholesale exchange rate. I believe this is the same rate as big transfers.

How did we survive those tough years?
Now we're seeing signs that a turnaround is probable and hopefully the currency-climb in our favour can begin as Thailand now finds itself in recession with gloom on their horizon.
The Vulnerability of Asian Markets Then (1997) and Now (2013)
It was a toxic combination that sparked the Asian financial crisis in 1997.
The bad news is that same combination – of Federal Reserve monetary tightening and Japanese fiscal tightening – is looming once again.
