Looks cool so I'll keep an eye out for it when it hits the shops here in the sandpit.
This is my main issue...most of the stuff I'd like to get a play with is just not available here.
Hence most of my camera purchases are made by reviewing reports and selection is oft done while in transit to somewhere else.
My Nikon V1 outfit will shortly be up for sale and the replacement is either going to be the OM-D or the Fuji X Pro-1. I've opened up an Aramex account so I can it shipped here; so once the initial furore has settled post launch I'll be searching Amazon for the best deal.
Looking forward to using my D300s in Hua Hin next month.

The Sony RX100 is not due for release till July but already it is being hailed as the answer to a million prayers. It has a huge sensor for its size & with a Carl Zeiss lens, 20.9 Megapixels, ISO range up to 25,600, AVCHD video, 10 frames per second in a speed burst, etc, it is going to take a long while for the rest of the market to catch up with it.
Despite the expected retail price being around $650, it is expected to sell its socks off as the must-have small travel camera. It is truly pocketable. Here it is in the middle with two favourites of mine, the Fuji X10 on the left & the Canon G1X on the right. The X10 sensor is half the size while the G1X has a slightly bigger sensor but weighs more than twice as much. And it doesn't boast f1.8 lens speed that the Zeiss has either.

I'm not sure it'll be the answer to everyone's prayers or just another high priced compact that most will not stretch their budgets to...for that price you're in the Sony Nex/Panny GF range...20 mp or not people are watching what they are buying these days and replacing their existing compact for another will not be a priority for most.
Looks good though!

I'm not crazy about the 20.9 megapix myself, 12 would be ample for all I want. But it has them & as such will be capable of making giant prints.
And I know point'n'shoot buyers won't rush to buy it, they have plenty of choice much cheaper. The market for the RX100 is the serious tech-heads who want top image quality in their compact camera. And going by the response on the camera forums, there does seem to be plenty of them who are salivating as I write.
Interesting you mention the alternative cameras at a similar price. There has been much made of the fact that basic DSLRs with kit lenses can be bought for similar money but the argument for the RX100 is its compactness & that it is complete. There are no other lenses that can be bought for it & it doesn't have a hot shoe, therefore no flash or optical viewfinder can be optioned.
I believe the NEX's from Sony, the One system from Nikon, the G line from Canon, the PEN's from Olympus, the GX series from Panasonic & others are all a marketing illusion trying to convince us they are a valid portable camera option. The only real pocket camera among that lot is the Canon S100 & the RX100 is the same size with far more performance.
I read where others are waking up to this & Sony has responded with a camera that has caught the public imagination. Initial test photos are a revelation for such a small camera.

The Canon G1X is available here at a reasonable price; bulky, plastic and to be honest a fucking dinosaur.
If Sony can come up with the goods on this one then careful, considered and honest opinion will be given.
