Uh oh...the Fuji X-Pro1 has just appeared here in the Sandpit...not in a camera outlet but in a supermarket chain.

They have the 18mm and 35 mm lenses and shockingly the EFX-20 flash unit. Unbelievably it is also 33% off the list price!

I would have snapped it up but the impending trip to LoS and some additional ticket purchases, hotel bills etc have stretched me recently so I shall have to hide my plastic for at least a month. 8)

Bollocks. :tantrum:

This indeed looks so good for pocket PNS

Getting one for sure once it hits the market, should be so fun to shoot with

Yes Von, pictures taken by the RX100 posted online are very promising to say the least. (There are pictures of the camera on this thread already, just scroll back 8 posts.)

The other big name manufacturers of P'n'S cameras will be working flat out on their equivalent model to the RX100. Samsung have just announced their contender, the EX2F. This is a fantastic camera but if you think the RX100 is expensive, wait till they announce the price of this one. It is really aimed at the high end user.

That has to be good news for Panasonic, Olympus, Canon, Nikon, etc. Their main problem is that most of the sensors used in modern cameras today are made by either Sony or Samsung. And I'm guessing they won't want to sell their latest & best sensors to their competition until their own models have a good run in the market.

Here's a blog I copied from the fo-to-gra-fe website. I like the writer's style, sounds like something I would have written myself...

The Sony RX100 Is Already #1

If you ever wanted evidence to prove that producing a truly impressive, kick-ass camera, and not listening to idiot executives who seem to think that keeping their marketing 101 book in their trunk makes them experts, is a good idea, it's what's going on right now.

First, the Sony RX100 has immediately become the #1 camera on Amazon. The most expensive compact camera ever made is #1. Why didn't the Canon G1X or Fuji X10 nab that honor? Because while customers will happily pay, they want actual quality and innovation. The Canon G1X was an eight-hundred-freaking-dollar camera with a lens that only dropped to f/2.8, and the X10 was $600 while sporting a tiny-ass sensor and disappointing lens. That's not the way to get people to part with hard-earned coin.

Second, the Olympus E-M5, which has been rolling out into the market and only recently became widely available, is already the #1 Olympus camera on Flickr.

Third, and similarly, the Fuji X Pro 1 is selling so quickly, its market availability can actually be tracked by Flickr's camera chart. It rockets up as people get their cameras, flatlines as the shipments to market slow, then rocket up again as more cameras become available.

We've seen similar results with every groundbreaking camera that's been released in the past two years. We saw similar results from the launch of the Sony NEX-7 and NEX-5n, the latter of which quickly became Sony's most popular Flickr camera. Fuji's X100 saw insanity when it, while costing well over $1,000, drew immediate acclaim, and even with a panoply of glitches and problems, became far-and-away Fuji's most popular camera on Amazon and Flickr.

People want groundbreaking stuff. They are willing to pay for it. They don't want the same crap, packaged in something new, and priced in the sky, like Nikon's "1" and Canon's G1X.

Just passed through Dubai this morning and they had the Fuji X-Pro 1 with the 35mm lens bundled for 8k Dirhams...

I was considering it until I found out how much they were fucking you over with exchange rates. :tantrum:

The OMD is currently retailing at 44,950 baht in Big Camera. They have a 4% discount in store and if you take the 7% VAT off it comes in at just over 40k.

Nice feel to it but my baht was destined elsewhere...

I've had a play with a mate's TZ20 and was impressed so maybe it's the settings, take it along to Jessops and let them have a play with it or you may even have a dodgy one.

My wee Fuji is temperamental and usually when you're asking someone to pose for a nice shot which is infuriating so once I have a play with the new Sony I may opt for that.

Was going to ask about the Nikon j1 or is it V1, but wasnt impressed in shop when they said it were manual zoom, so opted for the TZ30 and it were more than the J1 or V1. wished id gone for that now as now it sits in box doing nothing and ill go back to using the TZ6 which has always served me good

The Panasonic TZ30 is not bad accordsing to the tests I have read. The back screen is little bit flaky with colors, but for the rest it is OK. It goes up to ISO 3200 normaly (can go up to 6400) and the grain is not that bad in this high ISO. The autofocus is fast, it has a HD video. It seems that the battery is weak with the GPS. The Leica lens should be OK, although they will not be super-performant in low light.

Do not forget: it is a compact, hence it cannot do miracles.

Im just no good at taking Pics ! daytimes were great but trying to get good pics in bars or room was useless and the TZ6 is much better, the gps you just disable and battery lasts a good time.

Thinking of selling both TZ'ds and buying something different the TZ30 still has the guarantee only bought last month. @ £275.00 so any offers ??

There are not that many point and shoots that can take excellent photos in low light. The old Canon S90 and S95 were about the best - but had limited zoom.

The key is not another camera - it is to practice using your current camera in those low light situations until you know which settings work best. (also helps if you're not pickled to the gills).

So, before your next LOS trip - practice shooting low light photos of anything around the house or when you go out - until you know which settings give you the best result - with digital, it's a simple matter to delete any photos you don't want to keep.

If you use the flash, keep in mind the range - most point and shoots are only good for 3-4 meters (around 10-12 feet), plus the coverage area usually is not that big - so for a big group shot, it may not work.
