As is often the case in SE Asia after the room rental the electricity charges are the next most expensive element. They charged us 0.35 cents per unit and we'd used 146 units this month so the leccy bill came to $51.10 and as we'd budgeted around $50 per month for electric it was pretty much on the mark.

I kept an occasional eye on the meter readings during the month so there's no nasty surprises come month-end, but despite never using the AC I did begin to wonder how efficient our fridge/freezer was.

With the monthly bills paid-up and out of the way we would soon be putting our travel plans up north to Battambang and Siem Reap into action.

Certain monthly payments for the apartment were flat-fees paid in advance, such as: water $10, cable TV $5, Internet $20 (wired) and daily rubbish collection coming in at one dollar. Including the electric bill the total to pay on top of the apartment rental itself came to $87.10.

Phsar Boeung Keng Kang Market. No freezer section.

Every time I visit Phnom Penh, I go to a psar (market) to see the meat on display. I wonder who may buy this, especially at the end of a day.

Thanks so much Premier I really appreciate your comments. It was getting a little lonely here in this thread despite the views rising steadily. Great to know you're enjoying it. We'll be off up to Battambang very soon.

I totally agree with your views on Cambodia, for a while it's already been making up the bulk of my overseas trips already and for the forseeable future. Thailand has become just another side trip and visa-run destination for me now but hopefully around Xmas/New Year's I might be back for a few weeks to Pattaya to meet up with whoever is there during the high season.

You're right BEM, some of the meat on display in the markets looks shocking and totally unedible. They must have lead-lined stomachs over there.

We've (she's) bought beef quite often for us to cook at home and it's always been fine, but she cooks it very thoroughly until it could be described as burnt. Very tasty though. They don't seem to grasp the concept of bacteria and that things which exist which cannot be seen. I have attempted to educate my girlfriend on handling meat and it seems to have got through despite initial puzzled looks of disbelief.

Even though we always eat together there are times when she has her food and I have mine.

Early this morning (21st June 2011) I woke up just after 4am to find her already up sitting on her laptop playing internet games, so I got up too. We shared some iced-coffee on the balcony and watched the (very) early morning joggers and stretchers exercising beside the tended lawns and gardens near the apartment below.

The sky was dark with a red glow from the soon to be rising sun and I suggested we went for a ride out on the bike over to the other side of the river as it's best viewed from that side eary morning and she agreed. Last time we were there it was overcast but today looked like a clear bright morning was on the cards.

Enjoying this DC. Don’t take the lack of comments as an indication of lack of interest. This is the kind of thread I really enjoy reading but just don’t have anything to say. Different, interesting and appreciated :notworthy: .

Heading back towards the bridge we turned right up Route 6A as if heading away from Phnom Penh for about a kilometer. I thoroughly enjoy seeing all the differences in transportation and the way some other countries, such as Cambodia, handle their loads and their passengers and the view here did not disappoint.

She humoured me for a while and waited patiently as I took some pictures of the passing Khmers as they rumbled in and out of this City gateway.

Although the constant stream of traffic in both directions meant there was always something interesting to see, often the timing of passing vehicles caused disappointment when taking pictures.

With only iced-coffee and several Winston consumed so far we headed back hungry around 7am. She made me beans on toast and she had chicken noodles followed by a lazy few hours for both of us then bed. It's a hard life.
