Battambang

Cambodia's second largest city and the capital city of Battambang province, northwestern Cambodia.
Battambang is pronounced bat-dam-bong by the Khmers ~ translation: bat (lost) dambong (stick)

With the tickets purchased and minimal bags packed yesterday I enjoyed a breakfast of beans on toast made for me, with extra cold toast to take on the journey (yum). Items in the fridge had been consumed leading up to this day and the freezer section was emptied and defrosted so we could power-down perhaps the most energy-hungry device in the apartment during our absence. The electricity meter stood at 3330.8, I took a photo of it just so I'd remember and could check it on our return.

I'm not entirely sure how much the tickets cost, but yesterday I got $75 in change from a $100 bill after she'd gone out to buy them, but that also included $10 for her little sister as she was going to Battambang too, but not on the same bus. I'm guessing they were $7 each.

It would soon be time to rendezvous with our 11:45am Phnom Penh Sorya Transport pick-up van from the Riverside corner of Street 106 (near the Night Market) to take us to the main bus station next to the Central Market for the big bus to Battambang. The pick-up point was conveniently close by so we just walked and the van was already waiting for us as we arrived several minutes early.

From what I remember we only made one short stop just outside Phnom Penh up route 5 before getting fully underway. Surprising how quickly the transportation and local flavour changes just outside the capital city.

I took a valium in the morning to aid myself through the journey, purchased over the counter sometime ago before from a pharmacy close to the Central Market.

The bus stopped for two food and toilet breaks during the first half of the 5½ hour journey, both times I was woken from my slumber. We then completed the second half all in one go and it was a reasonably good trip, I'd use them again.

Battambang bus station was busy on arrival, at least the exit from the bus was. Bustling with tuk-tuk and motodop drivers hogging the exit gangway from the bus itself obstructing people disembarking, obviously keen for a fare. We refused all offers as her sister's friend (a member of the family who owned the guesthouse) was picking us up in her big Lexus 4x4 to take us to her guesthouse.

On arrival we were shown to a nice quiet dual aspect end room (212) on the first floor at the back where we showered and relaxed for a while. After my testicles had been relieved of their burden I went out for a walk alone as she stayed and chatted with her sister and the hosts. About an hour before sunset I was sat in a restaurant I'd found called "Khmer Delight" and ordered a beer and SMS'd her to come and join me.

The place we stayed was called "Keo Mony Guesthouse" and the room included TV, fridge, AC, fan and hot water and cost us $8 per night. Although we got a special rate they still had rooms for that price but they were a bit smaller with single aspect.

Because we were considered family we had been lent a free motorbike for the duration of our stay, so very soon she was sat in front of me at my table and I ordered my first meal in Battambang. Both the food and service in Khmer Delight was very good and we would eat there on several more occasions.

After food we felt shattered, so following a short ride around the centre of this small city we headed back and sat outside chatting to the family run guesthouse hosts for about an hour before retiring to our room for a good night's sleep, both kaput.

My first impression of Battambang ~ I liked it 8)

Enjoying this DC. Don’t take the lack of comments as an indication of lack of interest. This is the kind of thread I really enjoy reading but just don’t have anything to say. Different, interesting and appreciated :notworthy: .

I almost missed you back there at the foot of the last page, many thanks TS 8)

Woke bright and early at 06:30 on my first morning in Battambang and was looking forward to strolling these new streets. But before I left I enjoyed a cosy cuddle with the added bonus of some hand-relief, followed by a toilet visit, and I was on my way out into the fresh cool morning air at 7.

I liked Battambang already and within minutes I liked it even more. It turned out the Keo Mony Guesthouse, where we were staying, was just a minute's walk from a recycling centre and three minutes walk from the old abandoned Battambang Railway Station, which was somewhere I looked forward to visiting at a later date.

We planned on staying in Battambang for around a week, so I needed to pace myself in terms of not trying to cover too much ground too quickly. But each time I turned a corner I noticed something else I wanted to walk towards and see.

Like Phnom Penh the street numbering is done primarily using a number and grid system and is fairly easy to navigate.

Unfortunately there was no internet access available from within our room, or from within the guesthouse at all it seemed, but during the walks I spotted several internet shops dotted about the city centre.

I stopped inside one for an hour which cost me 1500r (35 cents) and it included slow speed access and a dedicated fan, but no AC. Other internet shops I saw were 2000r an hour which probably included AC as well, worth the extra 500r in retrospect.

Wonderful images DC and fascinating reporting with it.
A complete contrast to my behaviour while in Cambodia, although I did spend a whole day wandering around Angkor Wat and I have the photos as proof just in case there are doubters out there :D

One thing I shall perhaps never do again though is travel on the bus over there, the journey from SR to PP scared the shit out of me for five hours

I wouldn't want to live in Battambang as overall there is simply not enough to keep me occupied. But I thoroughly enjoyed the week I spent there and there are quite a number of decent days out to be had not too far away, I will get to those soon.

Battambang makes for a very nice detour from Phnom Penh if visiting Siem Reap and Angkor.

My favourite building in Battambang made for a lovely backdrop for some pictures.

As always, many thanks PT. I need a little encouragement with this TR from time to time 8)

I believe you regarding your trip to Angkor as I recall you saying before that you took the hot air balloon over the temples. Something which I haven't done on either of my two visits.

But I think you're right when saying you only spent one day. With all good intentions I was planning to spend several days there but during the first day I decided that one day would be enough. One does get rather templed-out and the tourist numbers there now are awful. I will cover my own Angkor visit later on in this thread.
