The markets are always a good source of interest for local flavour and there are two main markets in Battambang, the most central one being Psar Nath, set between the river and the main road through town, Road 3.

With regards to money, I took enough cash with me from Phnom Penh to last me for several weeks as I didn't know what the bank/ATM situation would be like in Battambang. As it turned out there were several banks with ATMs and money-changers located very close to the central Psar Nath market, including CAB, ANZ, UCB, plus the pleasant sight of Canadia Bank who's ATM withdrawals are free.

It was time to head back to the guesthouse now as I'd been out walking around for hours and my old bones needed a rest. Not sure if it was duck-hunting season, but they were available everywhere.

Having been out for a ride together on the bike during the late afternoon we were hungry and looked for somewhere to feed, we chose the Gecko Cafe. The street level entrance led upstairs to the restaurant and there was plenty of balcony seating at this old colonial corner plot building, so far so good.

It must have been the name that appealed because nothing else did. The clientele were all Lonely Planet types on a mission to save the world and they chatted loudly to ensure anyone within earshot could hear it.

The food in the Gecko Cafe was no better. My burrito arrived with banana crisps which were awful so I moved them into a napkin for easy disposal. She only wanted a snack, but the chips (french fries) she ordered turned out to be the contents of a packet of crisps with ketchup, costing $2.50. A very easy decision to never eat at the Gecko Cafe ever again.

It's a shame when a meal is so appalling as it really takes the shine of an otherwise nice day. A little while later were sitting at the Keo Mony Guesthouse entrance with the staff and family where they'd shared their home made potato soup and grilled chicken with us, totally delicious and it cost nothing.

It was now Saturday the 25th of June. I woke around 6am and dozed while pondering whether to go for a walk or not, but as I'm so predictable there was no major surprise, I went.

Left around 06:30am and walked miles for 4 hours including trying to locate the boat terminal but I was unable to find it, I didn't really try too hard. In a few days we would be getting the boat to Siem Reap so I'd have to try a bit harder soon and locate it. As it transpired I'd walked right past it several times without realising, they really do need a clearer sign.

I also stumbled across Battambang's new and one and only shopping mall but it was closed (opens at 9am), so I headed back to the market via the TELA petrol station where I cooled down while sitting beneath a vicious AC unit for 10 minutes with two ice-cold Zenyas.

Back towards the main market again and circling around and wondering where to eat. I finally sat down at the "Battambang Comfort Inn" across from the main market (Phsar Nath) and next door to "The Central Office Of Means - Provincial Police Battambang" (which was closed) and had an iced-coffee (0.75c) and a bacon, egg and cheese bagel ($2), delish.

Back up to the shopping mall again to have a look inside and it's so new it's got to be less than 5% occupied and they haven't turned the lights on in the empty parts yet, which I suppose makes sense. The games arcade on the top (5th) floor was in full swing, plus a slim spattering of little clothes stalls and a phone shop. Got to start somewhere.

Homeward bound parallel to the river via the back streets I arrived back at the guesthouse around 10:30 and headed straight to the room (she's still asleep) and showered and was in bed within minutes. This really is life in the slow lane in slow-motion, but I was enjoying the pace.

Despite this leisurely time-wasting there were a number of places of interest around Battambang which we (I) wanted to see and we began planning to do them over the next few days before we left.

Late afternoon she's off out on the bike to the market to buy the ingredients for tonight's meal. She never walks anywhere, it seems her lovely lickable legs exist purely for my pleasure only.

Potato and carrot soup, fried mushrooms and vegetables and fried chicken, all cooked outside on the front porch washed down with a few cans of Anchor beer, delicious. Can't beat a bit of home-cooking sometimes and she loves to do it. No complaints from me either and it all costs less than a bag of crisps with a ketchup-cup at the Gecko Cafe.

I am impressed by the high standard you have maintained all the way through this report Dixon... :clapclap:

From the quality of the pictures with their pithy captions to your personal recollections, this has been an exercise in how to do it.

Your eye for street photography is as good as any travel story or trip report I have ever seen anywhere. As a pictorial record, this deserves to be kept. To be published even.

I wonder who is wearing the loss on the Battambang Shopping Centre? Probably funded by the IMF or one of the International Aid Agencies who thought it was a good idea at the time. I can't see it being fully utilised any time soon.

A shame that the money wasn't directed to something more worthwhile.

It's comments like yours that give me the incentive to keep going with this TR pacman, many have likely given up a long time ago due to lack of smut content, so thank you very much.

Battambang's shopping mall, called the "Borey Thmey Shopping Mall", apparently cost $18million to build of which $10 million was put up by a Cambodian investor. Clearly that amount of money could have been put to better use in Battambang but the investor lived up to his title as more worthwhile projects might not have generated the financial returns over time. Leave charity and aid to the barang (foreigner).

Further investment was apparent directly alongside the mall in the form of apartment units too, I can't imagine many Khmer's in Battambang being in a position to afford such dwellings. According to reports I read a basic shop unit inside the Borey Thmey Shopping Mall is available for rent at $50 per month.
