The FCC (Foreign Correspondents Club) situated overlooking Sisowath Quay on the corner of Street 178.

This an overlook I like, too. Having a cold drink on the terasse of FCC, overlooking Sisowath Quay, Mekong and Tonle Sap, ... just wonderful.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this Dixon. I have never been to Phnom Penh but thanks to your terrific photo reportage, I have a real feel for the place.

And how confronting to have the Genocide Museum dedicated to the horrors of Pol Pot right in town. It must be awful for those who survived those dark days to have such a reminder in their midst. I can't begin to imagine the fear the population lived under.

Many thanks for your kind words pacman 8)

I have so many pictures it's not easy trimming them down to just a selection, there are just so many to choose from. I took 15GB of pictures and video during my 4 months there last year.

Phnom Penh is a City with an extremely sad recent history (as is the whole country), but it is sheer delight for the camera. I never got tired of walking around, exploring and taking photos.

I visited Toul Sleng first back in 1999 and then again in 2011, which comes a month or two later in the TR. It hadn't changed all that much since my first visit apart from the map of Cambodia made from human skulls had been replaced by a large image of it instead, plus the coconut trees in the grounds had put on a bit of weight. I will show some comparison pictures when I eventually get around to reaching that point in my "Next Millenium" thread.

Thanks again BEM. I really do appreciate some of you guys posting in this thread from time to time, it is what keeps me going.

As it happens I returned to the FCC the following morning to get some proper pictures with the help of the morning sun.

The FCC re-visited, in daylight.

Happy hour from 5pm until 7pm, all drinks half price.

The FCC is both a restaurant and a bar and also has a Boutique Hotel with 9 rooms, but I never stayed there.

I love some of the old records and there's many I could listen to again and again, yours included. Many thanks indeed PTB :D

I will be spending alot of time in Cambodia in the not too distant future so hopefully our paths will collide.

Let me know and I'd be happy to meet up and show you a few places of interest 8)

DC, I have not spent much time on the forum the past few months but this thread is one I've wanted to read. Knowing the subject matter and epic length of the report I had wanted to set aside some time to read it. Took me several hours tonight and I'm sorry I waited so long. It is educational, entertaining, and great photos. I look forward to future installments, and from the look of things we still have a lot more to come.

Cambodia is on the agenda for this year and your reporting and exploration shows me what I've got to look forward to.

Thanks for the 4 months worth of work. 8)

I would echo Hoot's sentiments in their entirety and would just like to add that those recent panoramic photos of Sisowath Quay are brilliant, it's so nice to see my favourite part of Phnom Penh looking in such good order.
I love the Parisian type cafes for a spot of lunch and glass of wine virtually every day I'm in this vicinity

If only the Pattaya municipal authority could keep Beach Rd in such pristine condition.

I truly appreciate you setting the time aside to read through this report. It is comments like yours that make the time and effort involved all the more worthwhile.

Depending when you visit I might be there too. I had planned to return to Cambodia for a much longer stay than last time later on this year, perhaps returning again in August. But the incredible urge to bring it forward working in tandem with the hatred I have for my current contract I will probably be bringing the starting date forward, maybe June/July. The plan is to stay throughout the rest of this year and the whole of 2013. Testing out retirement there, so to speak.

Future installments in this thread of last year's trip will include Battambang, Siem Reap and Angkor. I'm almost willing away the following few weeks in Phnom Penh before the next phase of the TR, but I think some of the photos are too good to hit the cutting room floor, so please bear with me.

Very kind PT, thank you 8)

As you know already certain areas of the City get the full treatment in terms of architects, gardeners and cleaners, such as Sisowath Quay, due to dressing it up for the visitors. While just a few steps away others can be totally forgotten and neglected.

Of course we have the French to thank for the wine and the wonderful bread (in the form of baguettes), something which I find lacking in Thailand, I love bread. The abundance of colonial architecture, almost always in the traditional yellow colour, is another pleasure factor for me.

With regard to the well-kempt grounds of Sisowath Quay on the main City side of the Tonle Sap, to get some perspective as to what lies on the other far less visited side I went over to have a look.

Sadly on the day I went it was overcast, so the pictures are not as bright and clear as I would have liked. But I did go back again another time to try again.
