interesting stuff DC, especially about your career choice.

However, you certainly got the cogs in my brain whirring about contracting. My boss knows I want to spend as much time in LOS as possible so they have been pretty flexible with me in that respect (took a month out this year, all paid)

Contracting definately gives you freedom and light at the end of the tunnel job-wise, which a permanent role often does not do. The trouble is today, one should just be grateful for employment as choices aren't often available.

However, if you're interested, the website that I have found all my roles on over the last 7 years is www.jobserve.com - The ex-sponsors of West Ham United.

Ive been following this report from the time you started it and patiently waited for each update and really have enjoyed it, :clapclap:
Great report and no doubt on seeing you next time i do will probably chew your ear about it.

Cheers TJ 8)

I've bored people to death in the past with stories and tales of travelling and I can rattle on for hours on the subject. So be carfeful what you wish for

I get accused occasionally of being a snob-traveller too, i.e. never going to Spain or the States and trying to get others to stretch their legs further afield on their holidays, almost to the extent of preaching about SE Asia.

Malaysia

I flew from Don Muang, Bangkok (no Suvarnabhumi yet) and landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and very soon realised that this was not the airport mentioned in my copy of "South East Asia On A Shoestring". I was about 50km outside of Kuala Lumpur itself at KL's newly built international airport, bloody hell.

As it happened, while I was figuring out how to get transport to the city, a farang girl who had also just arrived asked if she could tag along with me to the city. I said yes, naturally. We got a bus together which ended up in China Town, so that's where we stayed, together.

We shared a room for 2 nights together until going our separate ways. I did get the deed done on the second night, I bode my time, being the gentleman I am

Batu Caves

The second day the young lady and I visited Batu Caves, 14km north of KL, about 35 minutes by local bus (11D).

Just a little side story...

Before I left England for this trip and having sold my house I had nowhere safe to keep my motorbike. But as my brother had a lock-up at his place of work, he offered to take care of it for me and run it around from time to time too, ideal.

When I dropped the bike off there was a girl working there (20 years old) who took a shine to the motorbike (and perhaps me too), so I offered to take her for a ride, she accepted and borrowed a helmet and off we went.

That night I stayed over at my brother's house, as it's about 150 miles from where I was staying with Mum & Dad, and she joined us for a take-away and ended up staying the night with me on my brother's living room floor. As we lay there chatting, amongst other things, she said she wanted to meet me overseas during my travels and ended up arriving in KL, conveniently the day after the other girl had gone on her way.

Excellent timing 2%20Cool.gif

Pulau Langkawi

Once the English girl, Cindy, had settled in we made our way to Pulau Langkawi, as she wanted some beaches and sunshine, so we flew from KL to Langkawi.

In Kuah Town, Langkawi, sits this large statue of an eagle. Translated from Malaysian, "Langkawi" means 'redish-brown eagle'. So maybe the Island was actually named after this enormous statue

As Cindy hadn't been to Thailand before and with Langkawi being so close I suggested we get a boat to Thailand for a few days, so we did. A few nights in Hat Yai, before travelling overland back into Malaysia, bound for Georgetown, Pulau Penang.

My RTW ticket's next leg was a flight from Singapore to Bali, so I needed to head south.

If booking a RTW ticket I reckon it's well worth spacing out the flights so as not to just fly everywhere, mine also worked out a bit cheaper doing that, plus it forces you to make some overland or sea travel and not just fly all the time and miss out.

Thanks Guys, it's nice to take a trip down memory lane for me from what really does not seem like 13 years ago now. I definately covered some ground, I couldn't stop myself from travelling everywhere and just wanted to absorb as much as I could.

Regarding remembering things, I don't, but when I see the pictures from back then it all starts to come back, which helps me keep going with this. Much of this is for me having a trip down memory lane as it is for sharing

Malaysia
After just a couple of nights in Hat Yai, which is enough to be honest, Cindy and I took a minibus south to Pedang Besar at the border crossing between Thailand and Malaysia.

Once across the border and onto the main Malaysian highways it was clear to see how good they were in comparison to Thailand's, the infrastructure in Malaysia was so much more advanced at the time, and probably still is now.
