I didn't realize that City was such the poor relation - no trophies in 33 years! :o I feel your pain OTS!
Having grown up in Philadelphia, I've rooted for some pretty consistently bad teams over the years - but when victory finally arrives it is that much sweeter. As a long-time observer of European football, I'd say the problem with the EPL (and the European leagues in general) is that victory may NEVER arrive for City or any of the many have-nots. It seems that every year it's a competition amongst the Big Four with everyone else scrambling for UEFA scraps. Professional sport in the US is actually very socialistic in the way it is managed by the owners to level the playing field as much as possible. Even though there are definitely powerhouse, big city franchises like the Yankees which are "more equal than others", everyone has a fighting chance.
I'm curious - how do those of you rooting for one of the many clubs like City keep up your enthusiasm in such circumstances? Do you cheer for two teams - one of the Big Four to feel a part of the hunt for the big trophies, and the local team you grew up with whenever they are somewhat relevant?
We have another advantage in the sense that Americans tend to actively follow more than just one team sport. So even if your baseball team hasn't won in 100 years there's a high likelihood that your football, basketball, or hockey team has.
Nothing in 33 years is tough...

Joking apart City have great and loyal fans who will always support (i.e. Actually go to the games ) their team win or lose
Unlike other teams fans who just start coming out of the woodwork if their team happens to start winning things
