Well maybe I am getting old

I have seen the USD to the UK Pound at 1 to 1 (for the pedantic ones here it was 1.06 USD to the UKP) and I have seen it at 2.00 USD to the UK Pound.

What annoys me is not that this is a 'natural' exchange rate but is 'forced' by manipulation by speculators (who should be shot) and Governments.

The principle of money is that it is a convenient method of exchange. It overcomes the need for bartering of goods. In the last century Governments have intervened and 'forced' an artificial rate to suit their own economy.

A barter system is a bit basic, which we could never return to, as a basis for international commerce, BUT money is meant to be underpinned by realistic country assets.

The manipulation is what creates the High/Low variations and that is the responsibility of Government and Speculation.

Bankers have created the current situation and will walk away with 'bonuses' for ineptitude. Any other business (Doctors/Lawyers) would be barred from future participation as their reward/payback. Amazing.

To steal a little you are a thief
To steal a lot you are an entrepreneur (a word Mr Bush only recently learnt)

couldn't agree with you more Rossco

I have had to postpone my December 08 trip to LOS because the aussie $ has tanked :( :( :(

but reading your post has reminding us about the barter system, which has got me thinking

maybe I can barter with a LB, my cock for her arse, seems like a fair exchange and consistant with the barter system :D

I've been keeping an eye on the rates via Bangkok Bank and haven't seen the £ drop below 53 at any stage.

Come on Stevie,

All Thai Banks have internet sites, those reflect the actual Thailand exchange bureau figures.
The rates in the British daily papers are only what you would have expected to obtain in Britain the previous morning!

Anybody care to hazard a guess to the exchange rate late December/ early january :?:

This is really bothering me, as my whole decision about booking or not, needs to be concluded within 48hours

And anybody really know, just how busy xmas really gets pattaya/phuket, ive read several threads, but i really don't want to be part of a falang invasion.

PP, no one is going to be able to answer that first question of yours with any confidence.

There are a couple of threads on the Christmas/Peak season. Yes it does get busy in the obvious places, but if you avoid Walking Street for the few days surrounding New Years it's not a problem.

Your worst day there will be better than your best possible day in the UK in DEC/JAN. just think of those frosty mornings and dull grey afternoons, and book your ticket.

good advice from kliome.

As far as high season goes, this year could be one of the worst high seasons ever for LOS. All indications are that tourism numbers are much less than expected due to the economic crisis and ongoing Thai political problems. Back in Sept, this was the estimate of the tourism decline by the Tourism Authority of Thailand

Phuket is taking the full impact of the decline in tourists, estimated at 20 to 30 per cent so far this year by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

.

This estimate was before the full extent of the economic decline was reported.

So, I agree with Kliome, get yourself booked and enjoy your visit to LOS - it will be less crowded than usual for that time frame.
