If you are bent on taking low light photos without flash the Canon S90 is likely the best choice so far, but is also more pricey than the Panasonic TZ series. It does not have as wide a zoom range as the TZ cameras.

A bit chunkier than I expected but the lens sold it for me.........a nifty matching blue lowepro belt case and I'm good to go........

Took the thing out to a function and for some strange reason never read the bloody manual and assumed the functions would be similar....

You didn't miss much. I think.... Cannon and especially Panasonic have some mileage in compact high zoom cameras, Nikon will still have learn some tricks.
And I have more than just one Nikon in my collection.

Still looks quite bulky and large ... how's the experience?
Not as bulky as the EOS50D and 17-55 that i used to tote around
which is the reason I bought it, I am on the move a fair bit so needed something a bit smaller but with slr quality.
The experience is good so far, impressed by the quality of the pictures
Shot some movies and the quality looks good.
Lots of features that I never use, use it mainly in manual mode as bought in Japan so it only speaks Japanese.
check link below for some quality pics.

got tired of dragging round large canon dslr and heavy lumps of glass
as well as a compact for nightime
so threw the lot on ebay and bought myself a Panasonic GF1
nice and compact and has interchangeable lenses the 20mm being favourite. Can even get the big fat white belly shots in.
quality is excellent and it also does HD movies
all in alll and excellent little package
Lovely size, but how about focusing - the viewfinder, and the filpping mirror of SLR's seems to me to be the only way to get what you want properly focussed. Then, if you are me, leave the rest to the automatics.
Can this expensive gem achieve proper focus? My bloody camera can't - except on very rare occasions. (Canon S80)

Focusing is good only a little bit slower than my slr was
no viewfinder with the camera as it has very good rear lcd
I have external electronic viewfinder which makes it more like rangefinder than slr.
Only flipping mirrors i see now are the ones they check eyelash with
