That is a good starter camera - but it also depends on what lenses came with it. If you got the package with 2 lenses, 18-55 mm and 55-200 (or 55-300), then that was a fantastic deal. It is just the camera with one lens, then it is a good deal. Did you buy it new or used? 2000 Baht is a low price.

The guy said that it wouldn't power on, so he sold it. I took it home and charged the battery. Surprise, it works! It came with the 18-55 lens. So I think I did ok.

So I got a Sony Alpha A58 for 2000b. Is that a good deal?

So it sounds like it was almost new? I use a Sony Alpha 57, which I think works quite well. The proof will be as Platapuss wrote, take a few photos see what you think, post some and we'll let you know too.
I do have to say if all works well, the price is good!

You tried out the sweep panorama feature. It takes some practice to get the panning speed correct for a smoother stitching of the photos. However, it looks to be working fairly well - so I think you really did well with buying this camera! It sounds like it was used, but probably not very much, if the person didn't know how to charge the battery.
If you don't have the manual, you can get it on line from Sony. If you are new to photography, I would suggest getting a more advanced manual - you can check it out at Gary Friedman's A58 manual. I have his for my A57 and it was excellent to understand the camera more to get the best results.

As a amateur photographer who always uses a dslr to get professional quality photos I've often been asked what is the best point and shoot camera to buy which covers a variety of occasions, well my answer has always been the same - it really depends what you want to take pictures of. All of the manufacturers offer cameras at a variety of prices all offering pretty much the same quality output and functions. To be honest I've always been bias towards Nikon and Fuji for PaS but that's just my personal preference. I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge phone which if I'm honest beats most point and shoot cameras out there and if taking portrait photos gives excellent pictures an all lighting conditions, subsequently I now only use my dslr camera (Nikon D series) for professional pictures and my Samsun Edge s7 as my camera I use when out at night and don't want to carry around my bulky camera kit.
Hope this helps?
Cheers

I agree that some of the Smart Phones have excellent photo capabilities - that surpass many of the point and shoot cameras on the low and perhaps even medium end of things. This is reflected in the sales drop of the low end point and shoot digital cameras.
However, the Smart Phone cameras still have a ways to go before producing images as good as those from a mid range DSLR.

I run magic lantern on my 550d which gives it some great features like 14bit raw and peak focusing but the slow bus speed really limits video resolution
