One book nt to bother with:

'THE QUEST FOR KATOEYS (LADYBOYS)"

The Author, Lung David, is so homophobic and illinformed about LBs, despite being an obvious GG sex tourist in Thaialnd for many years, the only reason he seems to have written this book is to try to exploit the market and get more money for bar fines.

It's a really frustrating read, his commenst about ladyboys are so way off the mark and insulting that you just want to kncok the guy out. One of the first lines in the foreword is that 'Katoey' is the Thai word for gay.

What makes the book even more tedious is his constant need to comment on how beautiful the GGs are and how they are all attracted to him (he's not a customer, he's different...). He keeps going off on tangents of soft porn lit, about his cleaning lady, who he thinks sees him as he hero, but really she's trying to rinse him for money.

Death to Lung david!

Guns, Girls and Ganja. Off the rails in Pnomh Phen

Sorry, can't agree. That, in my opinion, is the worst book you could read about Cambodia. Badly written, sensationalist and totally out of date. In my opinion it has not one redeeming quality.

I just looked and saw it available on amazon, but it's £12.

You can pick it up at the airport in BKK if you can wait.

I've read many of the books listed above and would recommend both of John Burdett's books - Bangkok Ei8ht and Bangkok Tattoo, he's got a third out now.

Damage Done is very very good too and I know Private Dancer has had mixed reviews but I like it alot and have read it perhaps 9 times.

On my return home in July I purchased "Thailand Fever" and found it very interesting and a good read, I will read it again. It is written in both English and Thai on alternate pages, so in fact you're only reading half the book, but the advantage is that your teeruk can read it too as the same content appears in both languages.

The book tries to explain the differences between cultures; re: family, independance, commitment, money, gifts etc.

Not the be-all and end-all but it certainly makes you think. Better for those contemplating or already in a relationship, but good for anyone who wants to understand the Thai way of thinking and maybe become more understanding.
