I thought I had been through some dramas in my early LOS trips but you really had more than your fair share DC.

I guess the more time you spend in a foreign country the more chances you have of getting into a situation

A few incidents I do remember and some silly little details of non-descript things which happened. But it is interesting for me to review these tapes after all this time and that stroll down memory lane wich ensues.

Earlier in the trip when I was on Koh Samui there was a hospital incident too which I decided not to go into detail with at the time as it wasn't really that exciting. More a tale of girlfriend in hospital, inflated invoice, doing a runner, being caught, bitch german administrator, trying to put my girlfriend's bill on my insurance.

Maybe save that one for a story over a beer in LOS

Continued ...

On evacuating the room we held hands and felt along the corridor walls retracing our steps back to the stairwell. On the stairwell we decended two levels and were in clear air, obviously relieved to have reached safety. Once outside we crossed the street and watched. A few more hotel guests filtered out behind us and we all stood in a crowd across the street to watch our hotel in flames, along with the rest of people's belongings which were left behind.

We soon established that the fire was on the level beneath us and some people below us on the same floor as the fire had been forced to leap from their windows to escape, as the corridor was unpassable due to the heat and smoke.

It later transpired that the cause of the fire was down to a drunken farang who had returned from his night out and fallen asleep on his bed, whilst smoking. He was arrested and bundled away by the police and probably spent time in jail with a hefty bill to pay on top. We never found out what ultimately happened to him.

Regarding the fire services. Apparently the security guard who saved us all (I never did get to meet him) called the owner of Street One Lodge to inform him of the emergency and pending destruction of his hotel and that the fire services should be called immediately.

The owner did call the fire service but was forced into negotiations as to how much he was prepared to pay for them to attend. I was led to believe that several of his initial offers were turned down causing vital delays. They eventually arrived but didn't all seem to be from the same outfit, maybe he called several while his hotel burned.

The expensive professional team had the Simon Snorkel, others came in pick-ups with teenagers on-board.

Around 06:30am, two hours after we'd evacuated, the fire appeared to be out and the fire services had since departed. The evacuees were keen to get back to their rooms and collect whatever belongings had survived the fire and smoke damage, but that would be the least of their worries.

After several hours room numbers were called out and in ones and twos people were allowed back inside to retrieve what was theirs from what was left of their rooms, but reports of missing items quickly rippled through the tired and hungry guests and those yet to re-enter feared the worst.

It was not until around 11:00am, over 4 hours since the fire was put out, that our room number was finally called allowing me to get in and see what remained. I had a little nose around before being ushered up to my room where I retrieved our things and left. The floor was one big puddle and everything obviously stunk of smoke, including our belongings, but were otherwise undamaged.

It was impossible to prove who, but I would not have been the only person evacuated from the hotel that night to bet on the fact that between the security, the police and the fire services personnel who'd attended had had away certain salvageable items from the hotel rooms and guests. In other words it was stolen. They probably think we all have insurance and it doesn't matter to the rich farang. An opportunity presented itself and they would be stupid not to take it, so they did.

Nobody was reported hurt or injured in the fire and no ambulances came. But Bumrungrad Hospital was just around the back had it been needed.

We were fortunate to have escaped unscathed and not to have lost anything of value, we'd already taken all the important and valuable items with us so anything damaged or stolen could have been easily replaced.

After the fire we stayed for a few days at my GF's room which was located down the bottom end of Soi1 near the klong, not far at all from Street One Lodge.

The facitlities were rather more basic than those at Street One Lodge and comprised of a shared bathroom with 7 other room-dwellers and a couple of friendly soi dogs, but the room was clean and friendly.

Plans to visit Surin for a day ot two required a visit to Bangkok's Hualampong Railway Station to find out the timetable and tickets. Located in Bangkok's Chinatown provided an excuse for a wonder around this busy city within a city.

Surin, Surin Province, North East Thailand

We only stayed in Surin for a few days as it was where my girlfriend's home was located, but it was out in the sticks and needed a couple of songtaew rides to get there. I left her to it and had a wonder around the town instead and she re-joined me later in the day having picked-up and dropped-off some stuff from home and to see her mum and sisters.

All-in-all a pleasant full day in Surin as sometimes it's nice just to travel around the Kingdom for a look.

Surin doesn't get mentioned much and maybe isn't that well known, but they do have an airport nearby in Buriram and they host the Elephant Round-up once a year during the month of November, but this was December so that had already taken place.

Surin is a pleasant place with it's own style and character and quite close to the Cambodian border. I would return again sometime in the future to visit the family home.

I experienced one of those lovely toilets when I was up in the hills away from Udon. I was crying out for an Ass hose and some toilet roll.

Pretty cool Vespa there minus the mudguard and panels going through China Town .
Its amazing some of the bikes you see in S.E. Asia if they were in the UK they would be worth a fortune yet some farmer is using them to carry chickens around town .

After two nights in Surin it was back to the Capital on the bus. As high-season was upon us as we neared Christmas and New Year the available hotel rooms were getting noticeably harder to find.

So we just stayed down the bottom of Soi 1 again in her room and took it easy in Bangkok for a few days.
