Many FMs have asked me over the years why I like Hua Hin so much. There is no one reason as such, more a combination of things, but I think a lot is to do with the fact it is the first town I ever visited in Thailand on my initial trip after Bkk. First cut is the deepest and all that stuff. Also I come from a coastal town, so perhaps that adds to the homely feeling I have when there. I guess Hua Hin is where I did my Los apprenticeship and learned from observations and conversations how Thailand works regarding farang/Thai relationships. What ever it is,it holds a spot in my heart that no other place in the kingdom can match. What some guys might consider boring, I see as quiet and relaxing, HH is a state of mind.


NW and Dav26 are eager to check out the area. I have explained to them already that although is quite a big town, the main bar area is quite compact and can be covered easily is less than 10 minutes of casual strolling. Luckily for us we are just staying 2 roads away from this area. Time for a guided tour of this area. May is happy to watch TV, and so it is up to us 3 amigos to wander the sois. We take in all the bars sois, then head to the beach and make our way back to the port, which is only a minute away from the Celtic GH, all very convenient. The map below, from the Hua Hin After Dark website shows the main bars, and will help to locate any bars mentioned in this section.

An awesome report - I'm a quality not quantity guy too. HH is now on my radar and soon (hopefully) to be done. You should be on trips of distinction! Don't remember the thread - but this was awesome (so far).

Thanks Thailover57. HH is one of the lesser know gems in Thailand. Not too far from Bkk, about 2.5 hours or less by taxi or mini van. It would be a good option for anyone who does not fancy traipsing all the way down to Samui, Krabi, Phuket etc as it has the same set up/infrastructure and a nice long empty-ish beach. As mentioned, a 3 to 4 hour taxi ride from Pattaya if you want a break from the madness for a few days.

Sure is Boss, the navy usually have a few ships stationed off shore. Not sure if it's because the king has a palace in town, or to guard the bay, probably both. Mongering is allowed, encouraged even , there is not the same selection as other places, but enough for any given night. There are always a few cuties floating around, and as it is not a well known LB haunt, they are usually available.

Regarding prices, beers are around 65/80 Baht, and BF usually 300, ST 500, LT 1000 to whatever you want to pay. Some of the locals will appear later in the report. There are none of the 45 Baht beer ex pat bars that you would find around soi Buakhao that I am aware off. The late night area, which I mentioned also and where people go after 2am, (when it's open, damn police chief) the beers are about 85/100 baht.

My only question is this...

You went to Pattaya basically to drink and hang out with your buddies? You barfined I think one maybe two girls the entire trip and I believe slept alone 4 or 5 nights and no daytime shorttime sessions. Are you still kind of shy about barfining ladyboys or just not into it?

Thanks Cytollivar, Rx summed it up pretty well and you ask an interesting question. Having been into this scene for a while now as RX says, I am a bit jaded, and so unless something special grabs my attention, I am more than happy to chill out with LB lovers in LB bars, the whole atmosphere is my buzz, and call it a night if that feels right at the time. I have never been into STs so I seldom if ever dabble in the afternoons, preferring instead a LT for the whole night when I am up for it.

I get that and we all have different ways of enjoying Thailand but it seems you are going there for everything BUT the ladyboys. You just enjoy going to bars and maybe hooking up with a ladyboy or two on an entire weeks trip. You had 5 days where you didn't hook up with a ladyboy or a girl which is very different....guess you are just burnt out or maybe drank too much.

Well basically I am on holiday in an Lb environment. I have a good time like the next man, if the mood takes me I dabble. Perhaps you are right about being burnt out, I don't get the same thrill I used to get in the early years. But hey, I have a damn good time no matter what, and that's what it's all about at the end of the day I'm sure you would agree. I never sit in departures with any regrets.

After an hour or so of getting familiar with the sois of HH, we head back to the GH, and grab a bite to eat. Food out of the way, we all head back to our respective rooms, and plan to meet up downstairs in 45 minutes. Magically we all manage to make our reception rendezvous on time, and hit the mean sois. We stroll around, and first off we go to Caddy Shack, which usually has a few of ours working there. From there we continue on our travels and find an outdoor beer garden opposite the main temple where there is a live band playing fairly middle of the road safe music. After a few drinks there, we head for Soi Bintabaht, the Walking Street of HH for want of a better comparison lol. There are a few bars with LBs working on this soi, notably Nice and Easy, and Viking bars and a few more if you keep your eyes peeled.

Dav26 and May call it a night around midnight, and NW and I continue to sip away in the bar area. This area usually closes by 2 am, so at 1.30 I suggest to NW that we head over to the late bar area which stays open till around 5 am. This is a 2 minute walk from the Hilton end of Bintabaht when you turn right onto Naresdamri Road. I always enjoy a beer or 2 to kick of this part of the night in Bernie's and watch the great unwashed pass by after the Hilton closes at 2 am on their way to the other bars in this small secluded section. We are greeted with a big smile from New, the landlady here, and she seems happy to see me after such a long time. Then she utters the words I do not want to hear.

Police close bars at 2 am.

What? Even this area?

Yes new big police man in town is closing all the late bars at 2 am.

Shit.

Surely this cannot be the end of our night mmmm. We finish our drinks, and pop over to Caddy Shack 2 , in the same area, where a friend of mine Or works, to see can we get a late drink. We are in luck, but the shutters are half way down, and she informs she will have to close as soon as we finish our drinks. So it's looking like our late night is about to abruptly end at 2.30 am, or is it?

Or says a friend of hers has a bar/restaurant on the beach, 4 minutes away, and if we pay 30 Baht each for the deck chairs(this is normal during the day also) we can bring our own drink from 7/11 and chill there. This is a good arrangement with us, as the guy actually sells drinks, so really he is only making money on the chairs and any food we may eat. And so it is we find ourselves having some banter with Or and her friends till sunrise, getting tipsy on a sandy beach, it's a nice change from Linda's bar and Walking Street indeed.

Fantastic read BB and great to hear you showed the guys the laid back side of HH...a serious downshift from the Patts madness and never ending throng of tourists...

I wonder what wee May made of it all... ;-)
