I read something like 30 hours from US to phuket

It's about 22-23 hours in the air from Miami to Phuket. About two to three hours more than for me. But you will have to change flights at least twice and perhaps three times depending which airline you chose. The layover lengths at those two or three stops will really determine the length of the trip.

Kayak.com shows the total time of the trip. Also the time of each leg and layover if you click on details.

From the east coast I've booked flights on the Thai LAX-BKK non stop for around $2k in economy or premium economy. Then I book a flight from my home city to LAX on the internet. It's cheaper to book it yourself than including the domestic trans-continental flight with the Thai flight.

Premium economy might be a little more than $2k, I guess, but it's well worth it if you can afford it. I usually upgrade to business with my miles. But I find that's one of the better ways to go.
I recently bought a round trip economy class ticket, LAX-BKK for less than $1800, after taxes.
