Jim is the most straightforward person I met in Thailand. This is a virtue seldom to be found down there and... being straightforward no-bullshit boss is the best boss you can be.

He even (very politely I might ad) escort me and Oh from his bar last time I was there since we were chatting inside bar way after closing time, and I didn't mind at all, or am I the only one who likes honesty and straightforwardness.

I'd agree totally, Jim is a stand up kind of guy and tells it as he sees it. Nothing wrong with that and I respect him for it. I think the issue is cultural rather than anything else, we in the west are brought up to belive we are all equel before the law and being honest is good thing. This doesn't appear to be the case in Thailand, there it seems more to be about face and as such telling lies to prevent hurting someone is thought to be a good thing. Since this is my profession in my real non-mongering life I can only tell Jim does all the right things. He is The Boss; and Thais wants authoritarian boss. As we would say in our country if you give them just one finger they will snap your whole arm and shoulder from the body... On the other hand employees don’t bitch about everything like my colleagues do and don't threaten to sue if they have to work overtime or... they do what they are told to do nothing less and certainly nothing more - they need to be told what to do rather than to leave them the initiative…
