Yes there is what amounts to a practice run for the Asean conference that they're trying, not very succesfully, to arrange for October. You may recall the fiasco in Pattaya when several Heads of State had to be evacuated from a hotel roof, from rampaging hordes of red-shirts? Well, their deputies and/or Security Chiefs are having a conference at the Hilton Hotel in Karon on the 16th (i think). And they are determined that Thailand will not be embarrassed like that again. As i understand it the Pattaya police have suffered huge loss of face because of that, and Phuket is determined not to suffer the same way.We have been warned that all approaches to Karon will have 3 defence rings. As far as we are concerned, there will be a checkpoint as you leave Patong on the south road going towards Karon, a heavily fortified guard post at the bottom of the hill going in to Karon, and the most fuck-off intimidating macine-gun nest and armoured vehicles on the approaches to the Hilton! In Patong we are told there will be an "increase in security", and we will have to use see-through rubbish bags FFS, rather than the normal black ones . In practical terms, they will want to keep freelancers off the street, i think. And anybody causing any trouble will be swiftly dealt with.
