DC said it right - read all you can in the forum. Lots of valuable info. I couldn't of imagined of making my first trip without it. I found the trip reports to be extremely valuable, they really give you an idea of what your trip could be like. A guide more than a map.

Yes I also concur with the 'don't over plan' theory.
IMO specific girls is something to pass on also, unless you are to the point of being obsessed with one, but don't get hung up on it. So don't bother with a list of girls to bang, there are way too many and the choice is vast.
The one thing I always prepared beforehand, or tried to, when visiting a place for the first time was a list of venues to visit and to get some idea of where they are with a map if possible.
This is possibly the single best collective example of venues/hotels etc. of where to go, prepared by our one and only kliome:

Your first visit will have the BIGGEST impact of all your visits, also things will seem a lot easier and less daunting after your first day, believe me. Just do your prep work beforehand to maximise it and save time when on the ground

Apart from the sex scene!
When any single guy asks me about travelling to Thailand for the first time and what they should take, I always suggest they pack no more than enough clothes for a few days then purchase the rest locally. With shops like Tesco's and Boots in Thailand, there is absolutely no need to pack your bags with un necessary clutter.
I ALWAYS arrive with just hand luggage and return home with sell able merchandise to pay for my plane ticket, and I fly biz class.
Lewis Hamilton F1 jackets are currently in demand :wink:

I've found I can do quite well with just a carry-on bag. No waiting at the carosel or risk of lost luggage.
My first trip I took a LB to-do list and it went out the window rather quickly as there is so much unknown talent that will make your eyes pop out.

What are some favorite places to shop for clothes in BKK or Pattaya? Just hit the shopping malls looking for good deals? I'm not much of a shopper, but like the idea of traveling light and buying locally on the cheap.
Also, I have to ask Pentire, what are you bringing back and to whom are you selling the items that would pay for a biz class ticket? That would be a lot of T-Shirts.
You just have the trunk of your car open on the street corner selling DVD's and Flip-flops out the back

I've been doing it a while now and thru word of mouth, people are contacting me weekly ready for my next trip. Initially I would just roll up to factories near where I live and place some card advertisments on staff notice boards with my phone number.
Flying biz class also gives me the extra luggage allowance which is seldom less than 35kg when I return home.
Obviously avoiding customs is essential and I've been v-lucky thus far

Interesting thing about customs and bringing items back. Each time I've returned from LOS (to the US), I've had my luggage searched, but they really focus on digital cameras, computers and digital media. They couldn't have given a damn about the knock off brietling watches, gucchi jewelry, shirts and other things.
On my last trip, I was talking to the customs agent and he was pretty frank (and remembered me from my trip 4 months ago) and said single male travelers returning from Thailand are routinely checked for obscene material (kiddie porn), any evidence of human trafficking (documents, etc) and such.
Beyond that, they didn't give a damn about the two boxes of Kamagra gel and other assorted stuff I brought. I declare all of it, and so far no no one has ever questioned the value of the items either.
On thing, when they guy was going through my camera (I really don't take nudes and if I do, they've been already loaded up to an internet account and are off my camera) and kept commenting on how beautiful all those girls were (not knowing they were LB's). Yes, i said, very beautiful "girls" they have in Thailand.

Thanks for advice ill be taking my laptop with me but i usually upload all pics onto a photo album online. With my laptop, I belive u have to have it scanned through the xray machine at heathrow before u go through to the plane does it affect the laptop in any way later on :?:

No Ian, scanning a laptop through security poses no problems at all. I've been having laptops screened since there were laptops and have never had an issue (other than some bonehead TSA agent dropping my machine once).

Prior to my first trip to Thailand I had a cursory glanse over these pages but really didn't think much of them or take in much information which proved to be a bad move. I got sucked into just about every scam going and after a while I became distrusting and defensive to the point of paranoia. A lot of the stuff I got caught up in could have been and is easily been avoided had I gone to the trouble of studying these pages. Rule of thumb, just be very cautious of anyone who is trying to steer you off in a different direction to where you want to go. This can be people on the street telling you that a tourist attraction is closed and that you should go for a ride in a Tuk Tuk instead. Riding in a Tuk Tuk can be fun but if you're pressed for time and only want to see the tourist attractions and not get dragged around to shops where the Tuk Tuk driver receives commissions, then you best stay away from Tuk Tuks. There are various gambling scams as well, some people may encourage you to go somewhere with them and they'll want you to gamble on their behalf or gamble with them, this can only end badly.
There is also a lot of petty stuff like taxi drivers claiming to not have change so you are forced to pay a little extra. You need to keep things in perspective and not get too stressed about his sort of thing, the extra you may be paying really equates to a very small sum of money by our standards, if you cant live with that then make sure you have plenty of small change to pay with.
When it comes to drinking in bars, I prefer to pay as I go as some bars are known to charge you for extra drinks which you never even had. I think all first time tourists get ripped off to a certain extent but once you've been there for a while you'll get to know how things work and be better at dealing with it, you just need to be a bit street wise.
