It has become much more strict now - it's much better to be safe. Recent problems with criminal and terrorist activities have cause the regulations to be strictly enforced and increased severity of penalties.
Ask for an extension after you're there or apply for a tourist visa before you arrive - and be sure of the dates you must exit by.

The consequences associated to declaring yourself overstayed to immigration at an international airport are extremely light compared to the consequences of being caught within Thailand having overstayed your visa. The penalties are far more severe than just a fine. You are an illegal alien.
Not worth the risk, or worry. Ensure your visa covers your entire stay.
The visa waiver on arrival for eligible country's citizens is 30 days, or 29 nights.

I had 1 day overstay 4 May In bangkok airport. thought i have to pay 500 Baht in the immigration, i was pull out to another desk and he looked in my pasport. I day overstay? Yes i said and handed over the 500 he said no, no pay for one day, stampd my pasport and i was out.
I did not fancy to go on another visa run for one day, so my plan was to pay the fine, but i went out with a happy smile.

if its just one day its no biggie as long as you don't have the 1 in a trillion shot of getting stopped by a cop on that last day happen, and it has to be a cop that is anal and looks over your passport and notices
at the airport you just pay 1k baht, happens every day there you wont get in any trouble
