Is walking up Soi 4 to Nana plaza and Cascade a safe walk?  Anything to be leery of?

If you mean from street crime, I'd say it is not anything to worry about too much. I'm sure people have been victims of pick pockets or gone with the wrong free lancer and been ripped off, but random muggings and beatings are rare. If a person gets too drunk the are increasing the likelihood of something bad happening by a factor 100.

I think the biggest hazard from walking the Sois of Thailand is from tripping over a busted paving block, stepping into an open storm drain or getting run down by a motor bike.

Not kidding, the sidewalks (if you can call them that) are full of slip and fall hazards. Keep a lid on your alcohol consumption and practice common street smarts and you should be fine.
