Dropped into Obsessions BKK at NEP lastnight and was told the barfine was B1000 and will be the same, B1000, for 01/01/11 (tonight). I was told this by girl #3. When I told the girl that B1000 was ridiculous she agreed and said some of the girls are supposed to offer discounts, that qouted me B500-B1000 off the price.
Couldnt find the mama to confirm as he was busy with the cabaret show.
Place was packed. I think it was at least 90% japanese. Tt was a fancy dress/bikini theme.

It is standard practice to increase the bar fines during special holidays to counter the girls from bar fining themselves and going out to celebrate. Ridiculous practice, but the bars reasoning is to have the girls available and not out partying.

Never been around Nana for the holidays. The GG GoGos in Pattaya are very bad about this practice. Some raise the bar fine as high as 2000B. Many bars don't allow the girls to leave early in the evening, even if bar fined, on Xmas eve and NYE so the don't run out of girls. That is one reason I skipped Pattaya this holiday season. Seemed like a good idea until the temperature here dropped to -5°F with 35 mph winds.

As Rx stated, this is common practice in all ago-go bars. But not only to stop the girls bar-fining themselves, but to slow down the bar-fining in general, even by customers, in order to maintain the party spirit in a full house and keep spending at maximum.
Having said that, a go-go bar is about the last place I'd wish to spend my New Year's celebration... and that is what makes Pattaya a far better a place than Bangkok to celebrate the New Year, IMO. I've never done a New Year in Phuket, but I would imagine that's a better place than Bangkok too.
This new year a group of about 18 of us gathered at Bali Hai pier to enjoy the build up, last few New Years I've taken it in from atop the hill over-looking Pattaya Bay... Nice.

Why pay these fuckers Barfines, get the birds number and meet her when they shut or get birds on line, in shopping malls.
Its about time some of these bar owners concentrated on selling beer and not being amateur brothel keepers, only one or 2 places where I wouldnt do this due to the good nature and friendliness of the owners, but the Thai bar owners fuck em they are all ass holes trying to rip you for every cent they can, some of the Farang ones are not much better either Stringys,Ezy, Koyo7 and LaBamba being exceptions to the rule all of which appear to offer a good value service.

If you read what I wrote properly instead of your piss poor attempt at sarcasm you will see I said a lot of bar owners not all, I wouldnt know about buying beer from the 7/11 as I dont drink beer outside of a bar, my point is why pay 150bht for a watered down drink in a ladyboybar and 150 plus for a ladydrink when you can do a bit of spadework ,sort out your own lady from internet or wherever and go and sit in a pleasant surrounding where you are not deafened by jungle music and bugged to death by munters you would never dream of shagging.
I choose what I want to go with not have it chosen for me by pressure from ladies in bars.
I like to go to certain bars in Patts where I consider the bar owner/ manager a friend like Koyo7, Ezy (before), LaBamba ,Stringfellows I can sit there and not get hasled as all the ladies know me and have got the message, if I want them I will ask them.
Not keen on the bloody awful music in most of them except for Karls tunes.
As an afterthought was in Kings Castle last night in Bangkok for a look ,very reasonable 120 for a Vodka/Tonic (not watered) and some real stunners in there, I unfortunately had Amy with me who had never been in there.

Why make generalizations?
You may have the confidence and experience to drive your own route but give some people the flexibility. A newbie hitting Beach Road at 3am is not a good recommendation.
Likewise I would always advise someone to politely decline the first invitation, in a bar, for a drink.
The bars do provide, relatively, a safe haven. Some bars are more pushy than others but an average lady drink is only 100 to 150 baht. Gives a guy time to talk/chill with his selected target. From experience I have seen a stunner and invited her for a LD - to discover she speaks no English. Better to have bought 1 LD to find that out than take it home and use mime.
The bars provide a meeting point (not to experts like yourself) for a guy to feel his way through.
I met a bunch of Scots guys happily ringing the bell in a bar oblivious to the cost. We all make mistakes.
If we all avoid BF/LD and stop frequenting bars then you may as well go to some seedy soi and take your chance - odds are you will be the loser.
The LB chat sites are great but not much spontaneity in that.
We all have opinions and choices so perhaps a less dogmatic opinion would be more welcome. We all have a different style and temperament so ..........
