i met dada when over in thailand and didnt have this experience she seemed very nice, prob just a one off i wouldnt hold it against her, not in that way anyway

Very educational Swinecanine, thanks. I had the same understanding that Dr. honeytongue suggested. I have met several that used a nickname their mother had given them.

I met another that had same name as her brother, it was just pronounced different. So the mom nicknamed her Apple because she liked Apples. Apple is apple in Thai, I'm told.

Noon, Pookie, Moo and other Thai names come from parents, relatives and friends in early childhood; they use nicknames to stop the evil spirits knowing their real names, keeping them safe.

As for the other names, well yeah.... This Is Thailand..... it's probably marketing!

It's pretty common (maybe standard?) for children to be given nicknames at birth. Their birth names can often be long and cumbersome. One of my cousins has the name of Rutaichanok--how would you like saying that name over and over again? Her case is not an exception. At birth, she was given the nickname Nam.

Some nicknames are Unisex: I have male cousins who have nicknames of A, Oh, and Golf. Yet you can find LBs on this site (and others) with these same nicknames.

The practice of parents giving nicknames at birth goes back at least 50 years. I'm not sure if it goes far beyond that. I've made no studies on this but I do have cousins in their fifties who were given birth nicknames. However, It seems the same wasn't true for their parents (as well as my father).

While Dr. Honeytongue alluded to an interesting point about Thai superstitions, I think the practice of nicknaming has moved away from that. My cousin Golf got his nickname simply because his father was an avid fan of the sport.

If some LB's decide to keep the same nickname they're given at birth then, yes I suppose that would be the reason. I was assuming that LB's typically changed their nicknames when they make their transition.

Maybe I'm wrong about that? I should e-mail Nuoy and find out more because hers can also be a boy's nickname.

There are enough of them that take common western girl nicknames: Jenny, Annie, Sonya, Amy, et al. I'm under the impression that Thai nicknames of Nam, Bee and Fah are typically feminine.
