Australian arrested in Thailand over heroin smuggling

A 36-year-old New South Wales man has been arrested at a Bangkok airport with nearly 3 kilograms of heroin allegedly strapped to his body.

Andrew Hoods, 36 was arrested yesterday afternoon at Suvarnabhumi international airport by Thai customs officials with 12 packs of heroin allegedly strapped to his body.

The packs are said to weigh three kilograms and Thai officials estimate they're worth about 12 million baht or almost half a million dollars.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the arrest of the 36-year-old man.

"I can confirm the arrest of 36-year-old Australian man from New South Wales in Bangkok on drug related charges," a DFAT spokesman told The Age.

"Consular staff at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok have spoken to the man and are providing consular assistance and the consular staff are also in contact with the man's family."

Drugs trafficking in Thailand carries the death penalty.

Certainly gives new meaning to the notion of a "White X-mas". :?

Regardless of the potential for making a quick buck, the consequences are obviously not worth the risk, unless of course you place little value on your own life.

Hopefully someone considering being a drug mule might read this and have second thoughts.

Makes me laugh when I remember Customs asking me if I was carrying drugs .
Four trips in two years make me educated enough to know how severe Thai laws are . It does not make me a drug mule .
