Yes, I will be arriving in time for my first Loy kratong this year. Not sure what to expect, I will be in Chiang Mai and have heard they make quite a big deal about this festival.

I will just miss Xmas celebration but... I'll celebrate our Independence Day and New Year. And on my next April trip I’ll sure celebrate our Resistance Day and Labor Day. Good.

it goes off Kliome

I was in CM in 2007 for this festival. It all happens around the river and the night bazzar soi

there are thousands of people and be prepared for walking.

a few suggestions as there are a lot of events packed into this night

also you will need to book a room as hard to get closer to the night. The Royal Lanna is ok and central to everything. Also a discrete lifts so guess friendly.

there is several great restaurant bar near the main bridge (Saphan Nawra) on the opposite side of the river to the main part of CM

when you arrive book a table close to the river for the main night for dinner and drinks (for a couple of hours). These are hard to get as many people want them so book or get there early. Or if you liek jsut stand at bar and drink and watch.

then once the main water floats go past you, leave the bar go to the bridge (Saphan Nawral) and release the Khom Loys” (paper hot air floating lanterns) a bit of fun

then head to the night markets soi and watch the parade (it is amazing how many LB's take part in this parade. you never know you could get a freebie)

then head to the bars ( there are several along the soi opposite the main part of the night bazzar dont have the soi name sorry. One I remember has a boxing ring in the centre with open air bars around it and leading to the ring. a bit like the one in Pattaya). there are usually several LB's looking for clients.

But I believe there is now some LB bars in CM from what I have read in other posts.

enjoy your trip and we all look forward to your pics.

yes DC one needs options in case one is banned from a particular city

maybe you and Kliome should go to Chiang mai together and experience the culture.

I can imagine 2 refined english gentleman on a fact finding mission.

on 2nd thoughts better you 2 stay in pattaya not sure if CM would cope.

enjoy the trip cheers

Thanks Pela.

Yes, I have already booked a room I purposely arrange to be there for Loy Kratong, as I heard that was the place to be and haven't been to CM for about 5 years.

I'll have a look at those links, looking forward to it already. Thanks.

Now, where to spend Halloween and my birthday..
