Mind you, there was no McDonald's there back in 1980. And of course, no other American fast-food restaurants. The quality of beef and dairy was lousy. Or, at least, the taste was so different than the USA that a picky kid like me would have rather starved. My mom was a real saint for putting up with me.
But far more shocking to me was seeing close up the absolute poverty. The surprise was pretty acute because my Dad's family still lived that way. They still lived in a bamboo shack on stilts above a flooded piece of land. A number of aunts and uncles greeted me with Thai kisses and smiled at me with beetle nut teeth. None of them spoke English, so I didn't have anyone (other than my mom, dad and brother) to talk to. Naturally, they invited us to stay the night with them; I was so scared my dad would say yes.
I did actually happen to have a bit of fun on that vacation. But the memory of what I had written above has been a much more lasting one than riding on rides in an amusement park, playing soccer and swimming at the beach.

I'm a Bangkok fan, dont like beach and sand (but will tolerate it if plenty of sex).
In 78, BKK action was mainly in Pat Pong, nothing in Sukhumvit other than the Grace Hotel which was a great place in the early years, far more posh than it is now.
Thai WGs worshipped the monger back then, they were like indentured servants whose sole role was to ensure maximum pleasure/satisfaction. The GFE experience felt genuine, not like a business transaction. Any deaings with WGs were generally assumed to be LT affairs, ST was not as regular as is now. Big difference in attitudes between then and now.
Traffic was light, Sukhumvit/Pat Pong was a 5-10 minute ride basically. Never crowded with tourists, I felt far more special and privileged as a monger in those days than now.
Far different now, still immensely enjoyable, infrastructure far more developed, more choices, options, things to do now than back then. Each period had/have their special appeals for me, LOS seems destined to be a perpetual magnet for me regardless of any changes it may undergo.

My Thailand first-hand history only goes back 10 years.
Doubt there were any dedicated LB bars back then in the late 70's early 80's, but which bars/locations were the places to go for LB's?
Any more info about past times in general... please?

In a place like LOS things change fastm it's what keeps it all exciting, it'll be intereting to see how things change over the next 5/10 years. Pattaya is certianly going to be a lot different looking at the way they are trying to develop the city. But the girls and LBs will always be there somewhere.
It's fascinating stuff, thanks Doorman.

Thanks kliome and Dixon. TBH, in the beginning I was never really into ladyboys, my main attention was on the girls, but if I just happened to come across an LB with the 'right look', I'd go for it. Still girls are my preference, but now I would never consider a trip to LOS complete with out at least banging an LB or two.I agree with Dixon, it's great to hear some tales and info from a bit further back, most of us are still relative newbies compared with your experience Doorman, and would love to hear more of the nostalgia.

In 78 when I first visited BKK, I dont recall ever seeing any LBs, I knew they existed, the girls would occasionally mention them, but they werent as prevalent as they are now. I dont think any LB bar was up then in Pat Pong then, those only came up in the mid to late 80's I believe. The NP came up around 83-84 but still any LB action (however meager) was centered around the Pong (but more so in Pattaya). But from the mid-80's on, they were becoming far more conspicuous and were hanging around certain bars over others.
My first LB was in Pattaya in 84. I went to watch the show at Alacazar cabaret and was mesmerized by one of the singers/dancers. I couldnt speak to her because they were on stage and took breaks in the back, but I tipped a waitress 20bt to give her my hotel room no. She called (at around 4am), but I was already with a girl and said to call back tomorrow early evening. She called and we agreed to meet. It was a very short encounter, lol. Once we were in the room, I didnt waste any time. I pulled off her slacks bent her over, she lubed her bum, and I fucked her bare-back. AIDs was still a very rare thing in those days and all sex, with all mongers was conducted bareback virtually all the time. It was only in the early 90's when AIDs became a serious issue that people began to condomize.
That was the thing I cherished most about the 80's, that bare-back sex was the norm. Even all massage parlors worked bb. The girls would look at you with utter puzzlement if you were to whip out a condom. Sure, I got a few STDs along the way, but nothing serious that a shot or few pills couldnt cure. Of course unthinkable now (or very rare exceptions made).
Cheers,
doorman

Interesting to hear you talk about the change in attitudes towards protection back then, must have been many unwanted pregnancies with an opportunity for the girls to extract financial assitance from the guys.
doorman, are you travelling to LOS at all during April or May this year?
You sound like a very interesting person to talk to
