Is there any similar equivalent to Mr T when going from airport to bangkok centre, top of sukhumvit? I've only been to Phuket before and always directly to airport so never flown into Suvarnabhumi. Cheers.

There is really no need. If you take the public taxi queue from the airport, it will cost you around 350-375 Baht (including the airport surcharge of 50 Baht) and tollway fees. If you avoid the tollway - you can reduce the price by around 70 Baht, and if it isn't rush hour, it will take about the same amount of time.

If you catch a taxi going back to Bangkok on the departures level, you would save yourself an additional 50 Baht (no airport surcharge).

However, don't be fooled by the touts for the airport limousines, which charge quite a bit more than the public taxi meters.

How much do standard airport taxis charge these days to Pattaya?

I haven't been to Pattaya for years, but it used to be cheaper than Mr T's services (which I had used before they 'standardised' the taxi queue and before he f***ed up once with my return booking).

Also, do you normally tip the driver? (assuming no incidents on the way or careless driving)

1500 thb Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya hotel (or opposite direction).  Back to the airport your hotel may be able to get you a nicer private car (Camry or similar) for slightly more.

I always use Mr T just tell the driver not to pretend he is racing against Ayrton Senna when driving and the journey is usually OK. Pay anymore than 1000bhat and you must be mad or have lots of money.

I use Mr T when I cannot use the Bell Bus service to and from Pattaya, I pay 1000 Baht and 900 baht on the return and always give the driver a 150-200 baht tip after asking him to take it easy.

I am not being a "Big Time Charlie" by doing so imho as I am on my "holiday" and I do like to get to my destination in one piece especially after travelling 6,500 miles and 13 hours on a plane getting to Suvarnabhumi in the first place :)

i always use pt-taxi...http://www.pttaxiservice.com/

they are always there on time, and they normally have really good drivers and the prices are same as mr. T

in Phuket i just walk out of the airport Building and turn right where you can find the taxi-meter stand

Those who have been to Thailand recently know the new system that described in the first post of this thread. I finally got around to taking photos of it recently.

You walk up to the kiosk and push on the button. It will generate a numbered ticket that corresponds with a taxi in the assigned spot. That taxi will take you to your destination. The rates have increased slightly, and the airport surcharge is still 50 Baht. If you choose to use the toll expressway that is an additional 70 Baht - a good idea if you arrive during rush hour, but not necessary if off traffic peak times.

It cost me around 325 Baht by meter to Sukhumvit Soi 11 - that is not including the 50 Baht airport surcharge or the 70 Baht tollway fee. Rates are supposed to increase later this year - but compared to many other countries, taxi fare is still a good bargain.

The new automated kiosk system works well and has considerably reduced the problems with the previous taxi mafia.

good idea to post the pictures of their kiosk area, will do for the first time comer.
I never understand the discussions about 50/70/100 baht "savings" - I think it is mainly the sensation of being ripped off rather than the amount itself. If somebody has a problem by spending 100baht more on anything a couple for times as day, for taxi or a drink, he deserves the cheap Charlie nomination. We talk about 3-6 U.S. $ a day, 50$ for a ten day stay... Is that a deal breaker?
I think the biggest hit to the taxi Mafia has been the fact they need to check in and check out to go through the taxi lane at arrival, through an electronic ID card.
The automated kiosks have been replacing those young girls filling a paper with the registration number of the taxi and writing down your destination (that is where part of the 50baht fee goes, the girls before, the kiosk purchase and maintenance now).
The girls could better tell the taxi driver your destination, especially when this is not easy and obvious (as Nana hotel could be), something the kiosk doesn't. The tourism authority should arrange for English courses for taxi drivers to be able to entertain a minimum professional conversation. Still too many can't.
Not to mention when they drop you in a different hotel, 200 meters from your real hotel as often they are "Mr. know it all" and do not take suggestions on the right route, fucking it up big way for the same reason ("I am the taxi driver I know my route")
Nothing too different to other parts of the world,to be honest.

Come on man, you are asking a bit much if u expect a semi literate Issan taxi driver to take English lessons. 99% of their business is driving Thais around.

Don't expect too much from people who left school at 12 and earn $500 a month.
That goes for Hotel staff too.

And come to think if it, the Police.
