Hotel preferences - whats important for you?

After losing a deposit at Canterbury Tales before (unfortunately owner does not bend his rules), I chose to stay elsewhere after that experience. I know it was my fault for backing out and not re-booking, but backing out months before my intended arrival time, I thought I might get some kind of consideration, but no dice. In the end I don't really think that place was my cup of tea anyway.
Most of my stays have been a month to 3 months these last few trips. I prefer somewhere that is a little larger than most hotel rooms. An apartment seems to suit me more and is usually a bit cheaper as well. I have a couple of places I like but they seem to be getting very popular and more difficult to book as they get more known.
