Being a bit of a movie buff I’ve seen a few good movies about ladyboys (and plenty of bad ones), so I thought I’d do a bit more research and try to make a shortlist for the best ladyboy movies out there..

*spoiler alert! Actually, the fact this movie appears in a list of ladyboy movies is spoiler enough, anyway.. Not just one of my favourite ladyboy movies but one of my favourite movies of all time. A proper British indie movie and a cult classic, written and directed by auteur filmmaker Neil Jordan. The story follows an IRA volunteer, Fergus, who travels to London to hide from his past and seek out Dil, his ex-hostage’s mistress, only Dil turns out to have a secret (hint, hint).. The movie shocked the nation with its ‘lady surprise’ scene, and I’m sure turned many young men into secret ladyboy lovers..

Beautiful Boxer isn’t just a great movie about ladyboys but this is one of the best Thai movies you’re likely to see.. The film is based on the real life story of Parinya Charoenphol, better known as Toom, one of Bangkok’s revered Muay Thai boxers, AND a ladyboy. This is a fantastic story tracking her story from a young boy who liked to dress in female clothes, to a Muay Thai champion, and through to her sex change operation.

Originally a made-for-TV movie, Soldier’s Girl has become a cult classic among the transgendered community, and certainly worthy of mention. It follows the true story of Calpernia Addams, a transsexual night club performer, and her lover, Barry Winchell, a soldier who pays the ultimate price for falling in love. This is a bit of a tear jerker but a very good movie.

Another true story, A Girl Like Me tells the story of Eddie Araujo, a young boy who dreams of becoming a girl and does everything he can to make that a reality. It follows the many family and community issues Eddie faces to seek acceptance and finally become Gwen. It’s another true transgendered story laced with heartbreaking drama and tragedy.

To lighten the mood somewhat, Hor Taew Tak is a slapstick movie and a rare one at that: it’s a Thai comedy and it’s actually watchable! It tracks the outrageous antics of four aging ladyboys who run an all boy boarding school. As with many Thai movies the story revolves around the spirit world and trying to banish an angry ghost, obviously, but it’s funny in places, especially to those familiar with Thai ladyboys.

A ladyboy movie with attitude! Hedwig and the Angry Inch follows the story of Hedwig, a transgendered girl from Berlin, who ran to the West to be with her G.I. American boyfriend. Now the lead singer in a punk rock band on tour in the U.S., Hedwig recalls her life story by way of a series of concerts.
