As the article said over 4700 killed since 2004. Been going on a long time. Don't go to far southern Thailand. It would probably be too expensive for you anyway.

I visited Hat Yai several times and Satun via boat from Langkawi during several overland/sea travels back in 1998/99.

Although Hat Yai isn't the most interesting of places, it does have a reasonable nightlife which caters to farang and Malaysian visitors not far from the border, plus excellent transport links.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to go back, but that's not because things are unsettled, they have been for ages as occurances were reported way back then.

Yeah, but how many killed on the roads during the same period?
I have been down around Songkla and Hat Yai, never even seen a checkpoint. Yala is a bit dodgy and the malaysians have just put out a travel advisory for the southern provinces but so long as you don't venture into the deep South things are fine. Not sure what Boss was trying to achieve by posting a link with no comment.
