The Philippines still has a bit of a reputation for scams, rip-offs, robberies and petty theft, with too many of the Pinoy and Pinay thinking every foreigner visiting the RP is rich; though conversely they get a pit pissed of with every foreigner thinking that they are all for sale!
A bit of the local language and a lot of common-sense should allow you to have a good time in one of the more friendly of the Asian countries. I've been all over the place during the last 25 years, from Ifugao in the North to the Jolo Island in the South, beyond Mindanao, and have had only a few bad experiences, and none when traveling with a local companion!
