I am in Hanoi now since 2 days and its my first visit here. Its just a 1:45 hour flight from Bangkok and I paid 5500 Baht return with Air Asia.

Regarding ladyboys in Hanoi: forget it!!! Just saw a few gay boys in a bar in the old quarter, but they never heard the word ladyboy or shemale before.

Nightlife in Hanoi is absolutely boring, just a few bars who have to close around midnight. And its nearly impossible to get in contact with the local talent (say gg’s). No real p4p scene here. The girls are really pretty, but ignore you totally most of the time. You can be happy if they smile back at you, but this is an exception.

I accepted the offer from a motorbike-taxi-guy to take me to “boom boom”. He drove me to a small street in the middle of nowhere and I entered a old house where the papasan showed me a few young (and some even pretty) girls. I was experienced enough to let me show first the room where the “boom boom” was supposed to happen (you cannot take the girls out, no hotel here allows local girls inside together with a foreigner, unless you show a marriage certificate). The room was horrible. I wouldn’t even piss there. Of course no shower, the sheets on the bed looked like they was unchanged since 10 years and the girl who came with us to the room had visible injection marks on her left arm. Asking price was 500000 Dong (about 25 Euro). I just made my excuses and left.

Another annoying thing here is the overpricing. You get overpriced for nearly everything. You can expect to pay 3 times more then a local would pay. And every 5 seconds a cyclo or motorbike driver offers you a ride. And no English is spoken. Even in the tourist-restaurants nobody understands you if you ask for some standard things like soy-sauce.

Hanoi can be nice for a change and a visa-run, but take a good book and a lot of patience with you.

I am happy when I am back in Bangkok tomorrow!

Hanoi still living the Cold War - next time try Ho Chi Min (Saigon) in the wonderfully corrupt south....
