Quote (Phuket Gazette):
Following the nationwide road toll reaching 324 deaths and 4,484 injuries in 3,955 accidents after the first six days of the festival, the Public Health Ministry has agreed with Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamroong’s idea to restrict alcohol sales during long holidays and is drafting regulations to that effect, officials say.
Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsup said more “serious alcohol-control measures are needed” and that a yet-to-be-formed “alcohol-control board” will next month formulate regulations that will be in place for the next New Year holiday.

Wait till the king or queen dies :!:
The mourning will be at least 1 whole month, and it will be DRY
Even if I arrived the day before I would depart next day in that case.
Virtually every Thai would be in morning and glued to a television screen the place shall virtually shut up shop.
The contingency plan would probably be Cambodia or up to HK for the ponies at Happy Valley & Sha Tin I expect.
Long Live The King & Queen

But then again, I wont be doing the Festival in BKK or Pattaya ever again just to many wankers...
I'm with PT if the King were to pass away while I was there I'd be on a plane home the next day and if I had a trip planned it would be canceled.

Example - cannot use a mobile phone when driving a car.
When you consider car ownership by Thais - minority
You regularly see Thais 4 up on a motorbike
Transporting TV's and other enormous cartons
Cutting up cars and scraping same
Constantly on the phone (not a car!)
No helmets
Underage drivers
Driving wrong way on 1 way streets
The list is endless BUT TIT
etc etc
And this is not during Songkram......
So Dry Songram - great - the Thais will still get pissed and fall off their motorcycles.
There is an upside. No more fat bellied drunken Brits pretending that they are engaging in Thai culture! I have a rule - Stay home in Songkram.
