You call it handy? Then you must be from Germany, only we use this word :) , the rest of the world call it mobile- or cell-phone.

But check out MBK (on the 3. floor if i remember correctly) if you are in Bangkok. Lots of cheap mobile phones there on offer. If you want to buy a new one the price is the same as in Europe.

Yeah right Pat Tire! But as my company send me a few months to the UK and i went to a mobile-phone shop to buy a uk-sim-card, they looked confused and amused when i used the word "handy".

You live you learn.

Unless you just want a cheap Nokia to see you through a trip, I definitely wouldn't buy a phone in LOS.

The new ones are in general more expensive than UK by around 20%. You can get a good second hand one but it probably wont be much cheaper than the new one.

What Kliome says is quite right and I was amazed at how expensive second hand, old and worn phones were priced in pawn shops on Third Rd in Pattaya
Definitely better to buy in Europe.

I would say that the second hand ones are more expensive, but would disagree on the prices being more in LOS for the newest phones, I've found that the newest phones in LOS are anywhere from 20-50% cheaper. (Only on the newest releases.) I wanted a PEBL phone just as it was released. 2 Problems one was in EU it was released network specific and second it was about 200 pounds. I bought the phone in LOS (SIMM Free) for 89 pounds. I also picked up Razr V3 for a brother for 130 Pounds at the same time in the EU is was still going for well over 200, to date all off the phones I bought still work. I've only found this on the latest phones and you need to shop around. But Phones are the only electronics I have found cheaper in LOS than elsewhere. Also look to make sure the phone has a ASCI keypad. (They actually discount them over the ones with Thai on.) I've bought now 5 phones in the last year while there and all were cheaper than in the EU (They were even cheaper than buying the same phone network specific.) And as mentioned all still work fine. The only other problem is the LOS one's dont normally come with Bluetooth headset and I know the ones in the UK do now and also they tend to be supplied with US chargers.

Probably didnt stress this enough, you must shop around I have been in the main mail in Chiang Mai for example and Seen a Razor V3 for 15,000 baht and two stalls down the same phone for 9,000baht.

I wanted to but a new phone in LOS last December. I went around MBK and had a look at the night stalls in Ratchada and wrote down a few prices to check them up on the internet.

I don't know teh general EU prices for new phones, but looking on the vodafone UK website I only found one phone that was slightly cheaper whilst all of teh others were around 20% more expensive.

I had a budget of around 10,000bht so I wasn't looking at the very latests models, so as matchman says, you may be able to get good deals on these, but definitely with phones in the 7-12,000bht range I struggled to find any models that were cheaper.
