I'm sure some of you like to split your time in Thailand between a number of locations, and may need to book some internal flights to get around.

Whilst I usually make use of Thai Airways, there are a number of cheaper alternatives which could save you literally 1000's of Baht in fares.

Check out the following links and compare the pricing for any given trip.

Just trying to book a fare from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (return) for October 06 and this is what I came up with via the various operators;

Thai Airways = 5520 Baht

Nokair = 3750 Baht

One Two Go = 3400 Baht

Air Asia = 2566 Baht

All prices quoted include the applicable taxes, although the conditions are generally more stringent on the cheaper fares with regard to alterations, etc.

Still amazing the difference is pricing offered !

Just one note of caution, the lower fare airlines usually have low baggage allowances so watch out for this if you are heavy. I think the usual allowance for travelling economy is 15kg with charges for additional kilos. I note from the Nok website though that the Chiang Mai route has an allowance of 20kg. (er.....don't take any "offensive baggage", I don't know if this refers to the wife!)

I've flown a few of the cheap airlines several times and found them to be OK. Nok Air is my preferred airline. Here's the baggage allowance para from their terms and conditions conditions:

7.4 Free Baggage Allowance : You may transport free of charge checked Baggage up to 2 baggage with a maximum weight of 15 kg (30 kg for Nok Plus, start 15 November 2004), one of them can be carried on board at no charge subject to the conditions and limitations contained in our Terms and Conditions.

7.5 Excess Checked Baggage : You are not entitled to transport Baggage in excess of the free baggage allowance. If, in our absolute discretion, Baggage in excess of the free baggage allowance is accepted for carriage, you shall pay a charge for the carriage of that excess Baggage at the rate of 50 Baht per Kilogram.

7.6 Unchecked Baggage : Only one (1) piece of baggage is allowed to be carried on board provided that it does not exceed the dimensions of 56cm X 36cm X 23cm and provided that it does not weigh more than 7kg. Such baggage must fit under the seat in front of you or in an enclosed storage compartment in the cabin. Items determined by us to be of excessive weight or size or of an offensive nature will not be permitted on board.

You can add bangkok airways to that list, they often have deals and I think I used them to go to Samui on a cheap flight.

Asia air is almost always the cheapest and has deals weekly, also does cheap flights to Malaysia. But for me Thai airways are the best for quality hands down, and you get incredible leg room for economy. If there isn't much difference in the price I always go for Thai air.

One thing about Air Asia though.

If you have a connecting flight (especially international with another airlinge) don't take Air Asia.

They will get you there eventually but there on time status is not the best.
