The far southern provinces have always had majority Muslim populations. This problem have been ongoing for decades, but in the time of Thaksin's leadership became much worse with the Tak Bai incident. Protesters were arrested and hauled off by truck for detention. In the process they were bound hand and foot, tossed into the back of army trucks on top of each. Following a several hour drive in the heat, around 80 of them died.

This provoked a number of reprisal attacks that have persisted to the present. The Muslim extremists want independence and/or join with Malaysia. The moderates want more autonomy.

So far the violence has been limited to the Southern areas, but the extremists have shifted to soft targets in the South, such as hospitals, medical staff, schools, etc.

The current coup leaders are looking at more serious negotiations to deal with the issue.
