[Spyder Rocket]

Forgive me for not searching out the answer to this on my own, but I thought it would make a fun and interesting topic.

Have you ever wondered about the genesis of particular Thai and ladyboy names?

I suspect that many have their root in traditional Thai names and are just phonetically similar to English words. However, some might be translations from Thai to English, while others are just borrowed words.

Some of my Favorites:

Soda
Pop
Pancake
Cake
Beer
Gift
Benz
Pepsi
Porntip
Lucky

Please add more and to the list and identify the origin of these names if you can.

How about Cherry (which they pronounce as Shirley)? No idea of the origin.

Obviously these are their 'nicknames' rather than their birth names (which are much longer), From my understanding while many still use traditional Thai nicknames, some now use farang influenced nicknames, such as my current favourite, Garfield (working in House Bar).

 

The vast majority of Thais seem to use a short nickname, usually given to them by their family when they are young, though in the ladyboy world many have adopted a new nickname as they evolve towards becoming a fully fledged ladyboy (some changing their names several times as they reinvent them self).

 

Some common names and meanings (I may be wrong on some of these).

Nam - Water

Som - Orange

Lek - Small

Kwang - Deer

Mai - Future

Natty - Some thing like water flower 

Nung - One

Soda - Daughter

Wahn - Sweet

Dao - Star

Preem - Happy

Noon - Pretty

Bow - Beautiful

Porn - I think it means powder, but not totally sure

Meow - Cat

Nok - Bird

Moo - Which I like to believe means cute but can sadly also mean pig

Ploy - Gem

 

Some common Thai names which sound farang but are actually Thai

Kitty - Famous

Malisa - Jasmine Flower

 

The spellings often vary and you can find 4 or 5 girls with the same name and each one will spell it differently.

 

I'd guess names like Pepsi, Beer, Ball, New, Ice, Pancake, and Benz come from the farang words, but I may be wrong.

 

The names I find most fun are the masculine sounding names like Boy and Dan.

Some of the girls use two or three different nicknames, e.g., one with the family, another with friends, and yet another at their place of employment.  Ladyboys, especially, may change their working nickname when they change their appearance or work place. Ladyboys are also more likely than generic Thai girls to use a Western name as a nickname.

A few years back, I went with a ladyboy calling herself Nana. But a tattoo on her back said, "Joy." I am pretty sure she wasn't making a statement in English.

When speaking the letters B and P the sounds are very close, your mouth does almost exactly the same thing which results in it being difficult to write Thai words effectively using only the English alphabet.

 

Paeng means 'powder' in Thai, as in paeng-dek (baby powder). Then spelling the same in English again but pronounced slightly differently in Thai, paeng also means 'expensive'. Often written in English as paeng for both.

 

I remember asking Paeng at Sensations once whether she was powder or expensive. She said she began as powder but due to farang pronunciation she's just accepted that she's now expensive.

When she was first on the scene it was baeng or bang which means powder as in face powder. Paeng or pang means expensive.

Or so she tells me

Before i met Oh... she was called Som.....she decided to change it to Oh for good luck....but dont know if it helped her as she met ME...

recently on one of my trips...she told me that she was trying to implement a new name ...Ohluga...  she didnt succeed with that as i preferred to stay with Oh

I seem to recall being told that Beer had some meaning or significance in Thai.

 

And a GG explained the meaning of Cartoon - "like Tom and Jerry" !
