For all you non Brit's and UK expats, it's the Grand National today folks.
4.5 miles over 30 very large spruce fences at Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool. Off time 4.15pm (BST)

Due to animal rights protestors and the RSPCA having their say, it's no longer the extreme test it once was. Nontheless it is always a marvellous spectacle and very definitely my favourite horse race.

Forty runners line up headed by recent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and 9/1 favourite Synchronised ridden by perennial champion jockey AP McCoy.
Gambling wise It's not really a race to get too involved with due to it's degree of difficulty however, I quietly fancy Weird Al at 50/1(bigger in places I shall not need to have too much on him at that price to cover the living, drinking and shagging expenses of a fortnight in Thailand.

Do any of you have an interest in today's event, and if so who is your money on ?

I don't have a good record in this race, but I shall put money on Seabass and Treacle. A female jockey will win the National one day, and now that Elizabeth Taylor has died, this might be the year, it's as logical as that!

Just out of interest, why do horses die in this race? If they can't jump the fences the trainers shouldn't run them; or are there just too many of them getting in each other's way? I don't have a particular passion for horses as amimals but I don't want any to die either.

Racehorses even die in flat races Dexter, all they have to do is put a front foot down wrong while galloping and the cannon bone can snap....clean. Unfortunately I have seen it happen many times, it's very upsetting especially as the animal has to be dealt with (euthanised) immediately.
Put thirty large obstacles in their way over a saminar sapping distance and the odds are greatly increased. It's even money that there shall be at least one equine fatality in today's race.
Some might say it's a cruel sport, but compared to dog, cock and bull fighting it does not even come close.
