Beauty contest or pageant shows are very popular in the philippines. A special form is the ladyboy pageant or miss gay show.
There are the big shows like "Queen of Cebu", but also many small barrangay shows usualy held on fiesta days.
Some girls are addicts and attend as many shows as they can, traveling also to neighbor citys (check out the movie "The Thank You Girls").
These shows are a lot of fun and very interesting to watch. There are many natural beautys to spot among the candidates, but also in the audience.
You can meet all sorts of ladyboys: the good, the bad and the ugly; the beauty and the beast.

I was able to watch some shows in mindanao (iligan and ozamis city).

Terminology in Phil takes some getting used to. "Gay" for Filipinos means effeminate gay, not gay in general. So ladyboys often refer to themselves as "gay". Hence the "Miss Gay" misnomer of a pageant name, where all contestants are actually ladyboys.

But manly gays in Phil call themselves "bisexual" even though they have absolutely no interest in women, only men.

"gay" in Phil = ladyboy
"bisexual" in Phil = gay

Wack and incorrect usage but that's the way it is in Phil.
