Janus, very sorry to hear about your accident, but good that you are on the road to recovery!  Thanks for sharing, and it is something that we should take into consideration always be alert!  I am assuming you have medical insurance coverage for your holiday?

 

For those wondering - if the medical staff have western accreditation/qualifications you will probably have care equal to or better than hospitals in your home country. However, there are not many hospitals like that. Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok probably has the greatest numbers of western accredited doctors - but it also one of the most expensive.

 

Self diagnosing is tempting - but not always accurate and if you can find a good, reliable doctor I would recommend that. While the age of the internet is amazing, it doesn't match at least 12 years of training plus multiple years of experience for a good doctor to figure out what is wrong.

While I guess recommendations can help, getting a good doctor, both here and in the west, can be such a crap shoot. A few years back I came down with some kind of respiratory ailment while in Bangkok. I tried to ride it out, but it persisted, really dragging me down, and moving somewhat into my chest. I finally stumbled into Bumrungrad and saw a doctor. He diagnosed it as something in my chest (I can't recall specifics) and prescribed something. A day or two later I went home to Chiang Mai but I was getting no better; I had fever on and off, too. Went to Chiang Mai Ram to see another doctor. I recall sitting in the doctor's office in something like a dentist's chair. The doctor took one of those little mirrors that he can stick in your mouth, and he warmed it over an open flame. He then looked in my mouth and up and down with that mirror and said "sinus infection". Told me to throw away the "chest pills" prescribed an antibiotic, and by the next day I was feeling better. You just never know.

Sounds like you were fortunate in every way, Janus, at least starting after you were hit. And glad to hear about the lady taking responsibility and coming to visit! Sorta restores some faith in humanity. Take care and get well soon.

Thanks to you all. Just went to the hospital yesterday, every things looks good, but I Still have big pain i my collar bone, broken, they agreed to operate it some time mid week, great. Booked a room 28 and 29 near bangla road hope to see some of you in C&D.

 

Yes I was very lucky she took all the blame. Last time I was hit by a hit and run car have to go home to Denmark for a big operation in my skull, crash 1/3 of my front lap in my brain, 8 months in hospital. Lesson learned I bring a helmet from Denmark whit me to Thailand, don't trust the Thai helmets.

   I have heard a number of expats say if you are in an accident and their aren't likely witnesses don't stop. That is of course a terrible thing to say and do. Especially if the other party is injured. But it is the type of attitude the Thai justice system does, or at least did, breed.

 

  This doctor in Pattaya is well respected among expats and travelers. I have heard one person question his bedside manner. He seems to be the go to guy for many. Bring your passport (or a copy?) your first visit.

This post gives me another reason to never get on a motorbike in any country in the world, why the hell would you get on one in the 1st place makes no sense to me at all I would rather walk than get on a motorbike. I always hire a pick up truck and find most of the rest of the traffic stays clear of me especially idiots on motorbikes.

I agree with you for the most part, there is an endless supply of motorbike horror stories and I'm very wary of them.

On the other hand, you can get taken out walking down the street just as easily.

My head is always on a swivel when walking the Sois of Thailand, threats are abundant.

Yours is a sobering tale. I rent a motorbike on each and every trip, riding all over Phuket, and so far I've been lucky. Your tale serves as a reminder to always be heads up and expect the unexpected.

Thank you Surin. I´m getting better still have some paine in the hip, and a doc to come by my house twice a week. Here in Denmark its free so not  a big problem.

 

I plan to come back in January, and stay for 90 days, I will stil rent a bike and bring my own helmet. Yes  a car is safer, but not so many places to park it, and I like to live outside the turist area so tuktuks and taxi is not a option. Just have to take care and have a good insurence. And hope for the best.
